  • Your grace, Sir Marty of Guitary; please don't take my golden pick for this. There's a notable difference to my ears. The valves are much more bell-like and open, especially in the mid range. The attack seems more sloppy through the transistors. With that being said, I wasn't mad about the rhythm part on the clean channel, but the DeVille was without question sweeter with a nice smooth breakup and more articulate bottom end and low mids.
Shame me if you must, but while different and perhaps even a bit too compressed with notable square wave vibes, I can't say I PREFERRED either. Speaking strictly about the clean channel lead passage, I actually really liked the little champ and if not subjected to an immediate A/B comparison, id wager that most listeners and a large portion of musicians would be hard pressed to play a round of name my amplifier.
Having said that, the DeVille is a great amplifier and tonally superior to the champ. It should be. You can buy a champ 40 for yourself, your two sons AND THEIR 2 sons and still have enough for an eighth of God's most majestic gift and new strings. So that's my uneducated opinion.

  • Just found out yesterday basically all fender amps are solidstates unless u buy a fender blues Jr or hotrod.

  • So where is all your tone and treble at my little 15watt fender amplifier sounds a lot better than that $200.00 Fender amp ????

  • I've been playing at home mostly with my Fender Champ 40 for two years. I use a Boss street performer amp for busking.
I feel like I am finally close to deciding on a more expensive amp

  • I usually love your videos but this one is bs. Now the Champ is never going to sound as good as the De Ville. But you made the Champ sound like crap on purpose. I have that Champ amp and it sounds way better than what you dialed in. Using a Strat on a solid state is gonna take a bit different settings, take a hair off the volume on the strat, back off the bass on the amp, and carve the base tone with the guitar's tone control. Would have sounded much better. Your telling me rolling the bass back on the Champ would not have removed most of that boom-y-ness?

  • If you have a place where you can / need to play loud enough, the tube amp is always better!!!!

  • In a live setting, or practicing with a live band, you will notice how much the tube amp cuts through a mix.

  • I got a Champ 40 and it's great. Especially as a guy who just plays for fun, I can't rationalize spending thousands for a tube amp when I can spend just hundreds on a solid state that sounds plenty good.

  • I just noodle at home have a 15watt solid state Marshall cost $100 it's all I need

  • I had hot rod deluxe for years then picked up late 70s vox escort lead 50 , a solid state amp with 1 12 inch fane speaker and that has been my go to amp ever since

  • Champ sounds like it's played under a rug. The answer is save up while practicing on a headphone amp, and preserve your privacy and dignity while developing skill, then get a sound, pay for it with satisfaction.

  • valve amps are overrated, they belong to the past like many things in the guitar world that are still alive not because they are technologically worthwhile but because of 40-50 years old bands. Are they good? yes. 2000euro good? no

  • You can hear the difference, and to be honest-in a love setting, the venue is going to color the sound, as well.

I prefer the sound of tube, but either sound great in my opinion.

  • The tube amp sounded so musical and clean . No unnecessary distortion noted in the tube amp

  • Throw the trans in the bin. Buy ya self a fender black face twin reverb with a kick ass distortion. Will blow anything off the stage. It will teach u how to play

  • I have a Champion 50XL solid state. For $40, it was a no brainer. I don't like the small print of the effects, especially when it's dark. So hard to read! It's okay…….

  • Anything sounds good if you can play, but that champ sounds like a decent player on a pile of shit amp even at low volume. It's not because it's solid state. It's because it's a shitty amp. Do that same test with a Roland Jazz Chorus or a Peavey Bandit, and Solid State sounds great.

  • There is a huge difference between being in the same room with Marty doing this and listening to the clip through tiny monitor speakers, or even powered computer speakers.

  • If you want to gig, and I mean GIG on the reg……Make the investment. You can mod things sure, you can find great deals, yes….but you cannot cheap up on this stuff. I play a hot rod deville 1 and 4 and anything without tubes is simply not worth my time. I own several guitars that are sub 1000.00 and some upgrades usually make them play great and all but my main stage instrument is a 9 million pound American Tele made of solid swamp ash and it ran me 1200.00. Biggest difference? I bought it in 2005 and its been to the shop twice. Same thing goes for your amp….nothing would destroy that solid state joke faster than a year of heavy gigging. ……Make the investment if you're serious about gigging.

  • Its fair to say that solid state is catching up even though it will never catch the tube but the difference is not as big as it was in the 90s

  • Thanks for making this video Marty. You could make any amp sound good I love my Hotrod DeVille I wonder if you could get a better tone out of the Champ 40 with a better speaker?

  • Yes you need tubes. Absolutely. Solid state is for beginners. Especially with metal. I have used axeFx in the studio but tubes are way better. Plus you need like a million watts of solid state to compete with 50 watts of tube power.
