Peterson Strobostomp HD – The Greatest Tuner Pedal In The World?
This week we’re looking at what I consider on of the best bass tuners on the market today: The Peterson Strobostomp HD https://www.petersontuners.com/products/strobostomphd/
The Strobostomp HD is very nearly a masterpiece in terms of applying professional-grade/workshop/rackmount tuning to a small form effects pedal format.
I’ll be looking at everything that makes the Strobostomp an amazing and beautiful piece of gear and also a couple of key caveats that may affect your decision to buy one at its hefty price tag.

I’ve been using a rack mounted Korg PitchBlack for about 10 years and it has served me well. Recently I’ve retired from gigging (old and arthritic) so I’m selling my rig and will be going “ampless” and will only have a pedalboard with an HX Stomp and tuner, so I’m leaning heavily towards this Petersen tuner based on this and other reviews that I’ve seen. Thank you so much for this review and all of your other fine videos!
BOOFFARD BYPASS you say.. BAAAAA HAHAHAHAHA!!!! BOOF it up a BIT.. Over ere it BuFF Mayte..lol where r u from..
I don't see how numbered strings is useful at all compared to the actual note.
Nice to know, I just bought it and it will be here by next week just before Christmas 2024. I guess Ill keep it with just a battery and off my board or find some way to put a protection around it while on my board to protect the glass. But I was buying it more for doing intonation work on my guitars I built.
It’s the second best tuner, after the Turbo Tuner.
I recently bought a Peterson Stroboclip (i.e clip-on) tuner. It's absolutely brilliant! I use the sweetened mandolin tuning, but I'm pleased to say that it always displays the note name, not the string number. This is particularly helpful for checking the intonation going up the fretboard.
What kind of bass is the one you are holding?
BOSS users know that to avoid the rubber pad on the bottom, one can unscrew it, flip it over and replace it so the pad is on the inside of the pedal. Keep rockin y’all ????????
If you don't have room on your pedal board, you can buy their clip on tuner. Same great quality as the pedal. Newer ones have charging by usb. I have a clip on and a pedal. The pedal sits on my work bench to use for intonating guitars.
It sounds like hyperbole. But I own a Peterson tuner, and thus understand this as a simple fact.
Thanks for the review and demonstration
Great tuner but could be even better if it showed the cents like their ipad app and also their stroboplus model.
So big opportunity missed by Peterson in my opinion.
Thank you Mark for this review/instruction video. Like many of the others in this comment section, I had been using the Snark & the rechargeable Fender clip-on and after watching your review I invested in the Peterson that works great. Definitely faster, easier and more accurate for tuning. Still learning all the other features & functions it offers
to be honest I prefer something more traditional with two arrows showing you the direction you should turn your tuning keys to.
Something like tce polytute 3 (and 3 mini) or korg pitchblack (and pitchblack mini).
You can also get the serial number by plugging it in to the PC, and using Petersen Connect. It'll display the serial number on the attached device.
I have a Peterson strobo-hd clip on , a peterson strobo HD plus HD
Hi. Thank you for great video. I have one question, can you please tell me what pickups do you have in that bass?
6:15, year right. solving intonation for me was always a horrid nightmare hell :D. enjoying and intonation are not two words i would use together in one sentence.
3:39 THIS is what every new strobe user needs to know!!! …or you will go insane!
Great clip!!
I received mine yesterday, And it is absolutely gorgeous, they are now supplying a optional rubber pad and also a Velcro attachment and leaving it up to the customer to install.
I have owned a lot of Tuners, but this is amazing and will be my last one to buy.
If you are contemplating on purchasing one, I would encourage you to do so, you will never look back or be disappointed.
So coincidental, I just bought that one (after my boss TU-15 just crapped out after 25 years)…
this Peterson thing is so ridiculously accurate that it will drive you crazy trying to get everything caged…. caught myself taking one hour to do intonation-{on 4 fkn strings.! ????} ..thinking that my bass couldn’t Intonate,… wound up saying uncle, plugged the bass in, and the damn thing never sounded more tempered!… this tuner is ridiculous…
and I haven’t even messed with the ‘sweetener’ setting yet
I bought a Strobostomp amd sure enough first time out a stand collapsed, hit the pedal not particularly heavily, and the glass broke so comprehensively the tuner is unusable. I asked Peterson if there was a way of sourcing a replacement display in the UK but no reply….
How do you get Dual Lock to stick to the bottom of the pedal?
As a fellow bass player and Strobostomp HD owner, I agree with you on all points. I also play pedal steel guitar, and this is where the sweetened tunings really shine. Much like a piano, the steel requires being slightly detuned to sound in-tune (of course, there’s much debate on that subject). The Strobostomp HD allows so much user configuration that it should quell most arguments on the subject, as it pretty much allows you to create anything you desire. I added an inexpensive cellular phone screen protector to mine (a plastic one cut to size, not the glass ones commonly available now). We will see if it helps. One advantage pedal pedal steel players have is that we can clamp the tuner to the guitar leg, well up off the floor. Thanks for the great review.
Any advice on a decent clip on tuner for bass. I had a good one but i lost it. Can't remember the name anymore……..
They include a Velcro backing with it now. It’s not attached when you get it, but you can easily add it…comes in the box when you buy the pedal.
Clip on's for home and practice. Stage must be pedal for me.
I have a 6 string bass will this still be able to stay accurate with the low B (we play in drop A tuning so it's pretty low)
NEVER understood why some insist on tuning the lightest string first. i started out with a cheap acoustic guitar-shaped object that had no internal bracing or truss. teacher said to tune the light string first so i did and i had to retune about a dozen times before the lighter strings would hold their tune. it tuned better if i tuned the low e first and worked up. even then i had to retune a couple times to get it to hold a tune but that was fault of the guitar. but what was happening was the heavy tension of the low e was pulling the neck and the lighter high e would go flat. flat. ever since i've tuned from heavy to light.
I have a Peterson Stomp classic that works awesome, an original polytune that is beat up but still tunes. Years ago I made the mistake of buying 2 of the first korg pitch black pedal tuners, wtf! Total pieces of sh€t that went in the trash after they stopped working. Never again, spend the money and get a good tuner, clips on tuners are not to be taken serious either…
Literally going to order my 1st ever bass and amp. Really can't wait to get stuck in
Thanks for the review, it was very helpful.
If you are going to shell out for a Peterson and care about your pedals, don't put velcro on them…. Get an Aclam' pedal board and you will be so happy.
I like the blue strobostomp from the early 2000's with the DI out on the back of it.
Best Tuner On The Market!
they fix the velco issue now
