Beginner Guitar Lesson – Introduction to the Modes
In this lesson I’m going to introduce you to Modal Theory, and explain how the modes work, how to define and describe them, and what the difference between each of the modes is.
As detailed in the lesson, the step/interval definitions of each of the modes are as follows, with “W” meaning a whole step (tone) which equates to 2 frets on the guitar, and “h” meaning a half-step (semi-tone) which equates to one fret on the guitar. What ever note you start from on the guitar, if you play the subsequent notes following these steps, you will be playing the mode in question:
Ionian (major) – W W h W W W h
Dorian – W h W W W h W
Phrygian – h W W W h W W
Lydian – W W W h W W h
Mixolydian – W W h W W h W
Aeolian (natural minor) – W h W W h W W
Locrian – h W W h W W W

Matt is so good. Well presented and explained. He's the best.
Nice video. I like how you approached things. Trying to learn modes without first understanding scales and intervals is a lot to ask, but I like how you explained things.
That doesn't look or sound like a Fender or Squier. Did you build that yourself or have it made?
There's no one better than Matt. No matter how long I play, I keep coming back to Matt's vids to refresh and review. Well done.
All music including language(scale) and modes etc etc not from Italy….born in GREECE(Frygian, Lydian etc etc ALL ARE ANCIENT GREEK LANGUAGE) my friend….
And if i want to be 100% correct only words born thousand years later like adagio , prima vista etc etc…
The Basics ARE ALL GREEK!
Oustanding video and great info on music theory. Really good work. Thanks a lot.
I FINALLY GET IT thanks Matt
Nice video Matt. This is the best explanation of guitar modes I have seen online. I still have some homework to cement my knowledge, but your video certainly turned the light on.
excellent videos. congratulations!!!
It's hard for me to understand. Perhaps to clarify through a song, to see how and where they use modes.Otherwise, you're a great teacher. Nicely explained everything, but I have a little more to immerse myself and focus. Go ahead with these classes. Thanks a lot. My goal is to play as Malmsteen, John Petrucci, Steve Vai, Satriani, Borislav Mitic, Jeff Lommis, Andy James ….
It took me long enough, but I think I got it. Thanks mate.
What's the difference between a mode and a scale?
Hi Matt. I've been trying to get my head around this for several months; videos, lessons, scripture etc…
I think the penny just dropped. Sadly I'm at work so I can't practice what you just taught in your lesson, but I can't wait to get home!
You have a very relaxed and welcoming style of teaching. Sometimes a teachers tutorials come across as wizardry and it can be quite daunting. Not you, my friend.
I have subscribed, I shall be coming back for more!
I'm pushing 60 and am a fairly accomplished finger style guitarist and rhythm player. I have never been one for leads, and am typically odd man out or the '..we're going to slow it down now…' guy at jam sessions and music gatherings. I'm sick of being 'that guy' so am trying for the first time to understand and learn music theory and scales and whatnot so I can up my game (if music is your muse, you're never too old). Anyway, I've watched scores of video tutorials, read a ton of material, and am currently taking guitar lessons. Hands down, I have learned more from a few of Matt's videos than from all the other sources combined: he is articulate, does not lose me – well, rarely – with technical jargon, and proceeds logically in small steps which build one upon the other. Some people are just really good teachers.
Matt, Thank You. This is the ultimate best explanation I have ever heard/or found. I have purchased loads of guitar books on theory, chords and scale relationships. But you are the only teacher that ever made sense of it all. Thanks again, and keep up the good work. I will be getting your book.
Love the teaching…
great explanation, thanks matt
awesome 😀 this helped a lot, keep it up!
As always, a very good lesson! Thanks a lot!
