Boss Katana – Modded Marshall Tones

if you are looking for Boss Katana patches here is the link.

The Boss Katana has some surprisingly good overdrive pedal emulations, in this video, I see if the Katana GUV DS pedal can compete with a Friedman BE-OD Pedal. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

  • These tutorials aren't very insightful because there's very little explanation given as to why most settings are adjusted a certain way

  • I bought the boss katana 50 mk2 about a year ago and for the life of me I have struggled to get a good high gain tone until I came across this video. I pretty much copied the settings and I’ve finally managed to get the tone that I’ve been looking for all this time, I couldn’t be more thrilled.

  • Is the gen 3 worth it? Or is mk2 still good? There is a tone in gen 3 called PUSHED. That people like and wonder if you can get it on the gen2? Also does gen 2 do ac30

  • Your video shows delay and reverb on the editor in green mode but the video does not state what types and what settings you are using to achieve this tone in the video. It only covers the Governor.
Can you please advise what they are and settings for them?

  • Nice Modded Marshall tone example.
Still figuring out my new Katana.
The Katana leans heavily towards high gain distortion and I'm finding hard to tone it down to my taste
The comment: "The clean amp with boost sounds far better than the Brown, Crunch or Lead .."
    was exactly my experience.
    RE: @1:57 "…So, there's our basic clean sound…"
IMHO -That sound settings has gone well past edge-of-breakup.

  • I was just about giving up on that perfect High Gain, yet clear cutting through the mix guitar tone. Then I found this video. Just copied these settings for my main "Chorus" tone (turned up the gain to 65 and raised presence to 65) then lowered the gain to to 45 and presence to 60 for a Rhythm "Verse" tone. Turned the Effect level all the way up and Gain to 75 with Presence at 70 for a lead solo tone. And finally, Turned the Gov boost off and lowered the gain to 50 and Presence back to 65 for Clean. It's the perfect 4 channel set up! THANK YOU! My band actually told me this is the first time they heard me in the mix!

  • hi guys, I modified my katana mk II by adding a bD.I. Red 5 Hughes and Kettner box to go straight out with the xké cable and go into the mixer.. these patches are wonderful, and I thank studio rats, but the gain might be too high to enter. in the band's mixer… what do you think? a good sound rarely has high gain… I ask you

  • I know this video is older- but I make TikToks and I am running a tube boost in a katana and replicated the clean funk of a JCM and am doing a chain with a DB2. I’d love to give you credit for laying this amazing head start out- is that ok with you?

  • Can you not get this clean tone without using tone studio? I dont have a pc , just want something user friendly to use at jams etc

  • I've set up this particular patch but it sounds nowhere near good as the sound from this video. I am playing Gibson Les Paul but the sound from Katana is not that rich, it lacks bottom end and is much harsher, although the settings are the same.

  • I do the same thing with the TC Electronic JIMS45. I set the Katana to a good "clean" tone and then add the JIMS45. It works very well as a tone shaper and it works great as the front of the amp, too. In terms of versatility, just plug the JIMS45 into the input into the front of the amp. Sounds great.

  • I'm absolutely sold. I'll be getting one soon, though I'll still keep my JCM2000 and 4/12 cab, at least for a while I expect; sorta tough to see me wanting to get rid of it unless I get in a cash crunch…. No doubt that the key to using the Katana is in the Tone Studio software…without that you have no idea what this amp will truly do. Tremendousl video, great tones, thanks for sharing… great playing also. wow.

  • Literally every single demo he does sounds the same. It doesn't matter if it's a fucking neural, a real amp, a pedal it's always the same.

  • I have the exact same settings as you and it sounds muddy and not like a clean crunch tone at all. anyone know why? head mkii.

  • Thx a lot for the tip ???????? However I can't save the Booster configuration in the Tone Studio. Anybody knows why?
    Kind regards

  • Forget about sounding like a Marshall for moment, these are just legitimately great crunch tones. They've got heaps of snarl that you want in a mid to high gain dirty sound.

  • I know this is porbably an incredibly stupid question, but which boss katana amp is he using in this video?

  • Now THAT was helpful. I've been traying to get a sound like this from my Katana (MK I) like, forever. And it even don't sound overly noisy / hummy, with my single coil Telecaster knock-off. Suddenly I can sound quite like Brian May on my open chords. Excellent!

  • My only question to you, Paul is what does it sound like hearing it in the room? A lot of us might be playing in bands, and not have the ability to mic it up through the PA system.

  • I am so glad that I found this channel. I had just decided to get away from my line 6 modeler and try to upgrade to something that sounded more professional. My boss katana Mark two artist amp is on its way and I can’t wait to try out some of your patches as well. Thank you so much for all this great information. And by the way, Paul, I am just way too jealous of your guitar playing lol.

  • can anyone help me on why my amp (artist mk2) with the same settings sounds like shit. It's just a muddy sound and I trried different guitars so it's not a guitar problem…
