  • I back the tone a little bit for jazz tones on my Natural Sher II, but I’ave changed pups to Gibson ‘57, added bone nut as well and threw thicker flat wounds in.

  • Lindy Fralin out of Virginia, has EXCELLENT humbuckers called Unbuckers which are perfect for coil splitting. Slightly uneven wound, so when you split the humbucker into single coil, you get more output than just “half” the traditional humbucker. Not nearly the volume drop off, and very usable single coil even if they’re not quite as toneful in that mode as true single coils.

I have these pickups in two great guitars. One Sheraton and a Gibson Les Paul. I’ve had them for years. I stand by them. And btw, their full humbucker sound is lovely, and as you would expect in a low-wind, lower DCR, PAF-style humbucker.

    Please check them out!

  • Thanks Jack I play a sheraton 11 Pro and I've found it the most difficult of my guitars to get the sound I want your v I do is very helpful

  • On the section were you demo both pickups on, with one of the volume pots backed off, unfortunately couldn't hear the difference due to the high gain your using, probably be more noticeable on a clean sound, good video though, cheers from London,UK.????

  • Thanks for the demo. I just ordered the pro and this tells me that it will do everything that all my others can do. Do t really like the neck on the PRS 594 or the Guild starfire 3. The LP and this one will be my go to.

  • Hi Jack, what year is your Sheraton ii? I have a 2006, and my bridge sound nothing like yours!! Yours is amazing!

  • Great video, Jack. Another thing I've found that works wonders for a Sheraton "jazz tone" is to put Chrome lights on it. I'm not generally a fan of flat wound strings but they get the job done. Also… you're right that rolling off the tone on the guitar tends to muddy the waters… best to do that on the amp first and then maybe on the guitar a bit if it's not enough. Cheers

  • Great playing! Great tones!
I have the exact same model (I got it on the cheap, from a guy who was closing his music shop), but I can't really dial in the tones I'm after. I play mainly clean tones (jazz, funk, and mildly overdriven blues). My main amp is a Hughes & Kettner Stateman, and I also use amp simulations (Mustang Fender, Line 6 Pod HD and a Valeton I got for half the price).
My main criticism is that the stock pickups generate harsh and unpleasant harmonics if I dial everything at 10. But the tone gets muddy and ill-defined if I dial the volume back, even just a little. I've noticed the shrill harmonics issue on other Epiphone models, such as the Joe Pass, which is why I didn't buy one when I was looking for a jazz box.
I mostly use the neck pickup, I really don't like the bridge pickup. Another thing: the pickups are not balanced: the bridge pickup is a lot weaker than the neck pickup.
As a consequence, I find myself constantly raising or lowering the height of each pickup in order to get a better balance between both pickups, and messing around with the pots a lot, while I should really be playing.
As for rock or hard rock tones (I don't do chug-chug), all I get are shrill and ill-defined tones, not the creamy overdriven goodness I'm looking for. Maybe my amp is not the best platform for overdriven tones. Or maybe I got sub-standards pickups. Most probably, my technique sucks.
I am now contemplating swapping the stock pickups for Wilkinsons.
But I'll maybe give the stock pickups another chance after watching your videos 🙂
One last thing: at least on my guitar, the neck is heavier than the body so it tends to sag whenever I play at gigs.

  • It sounds beautiful. I've heard it's quite heavy, does it make it a bit uncomfortable to hold? Thanks

  • Hi. Thanks for your video. I' ve a Sheraton II made in Korea 1991. Great guitar. The sound that I was looking for

  • I have a 1995 model and it sounds great when I use the EQ like John Lee Hooker. Awesome guitar for blues, soul, classic rock and bossa nova.

  • I have a 2005 from Korea, also in black. Use it for jazz, in fact I prefer it to my €2000 FGN which is quacky

  • I've just been given A Shine 906 br.
It's made in Korea same factory as Epiphone and is the factories own brand.
Fitted with as bigsby It's basically a Sheriton clone I think.
I've never owned a semi hollow before and this video is perfect for me right now. Great stuff thank you and subbed.

  • Just bought an Epiphone Sheraton II. Can’t wait till it arrives. I love that warm bluesy sound it has. Most of all, it’s the one guitar that you can basically play any style with!

  • Glad to see you not playing only blues through this. My favorite user of this guitar is far-far away from blues; Brian Aubert of Silversun Pickups.

  • Thanks Jack. Most helpful guidance. Glad to see my guitar and amp combination in your video. I took your advice in an earlier video and bought the Sheraton instead of the Epi 335.
