Bass Gear Reviews – Revisiting Sound Examples
I wrote bass gear reviews for magazines for about 25 years. Then I stopped doing it because I got bored. Basically because of the problem: “how many ways are there to describe and alder body, a maple neck or a rosewood fingerboard”?
However, the lesson I took out of these many years in which I laid my hands on countless bassguitars is, that there is a mistery in how an instrument speaks to you and how it can inspire you or not. You pretty much know/feel within seconds whether an instrument is “made for you” or not. My bassplayer friends will know what I am talking about.
So, the actual fun part of doing these reviews was to record some initial ideas, that came out of me the very moment I picked up the bass and started playing. Isn’t it fascinating? Some instruments literally swamped me with ideas and inspiration while others just sat there and it took me forever to squeeze something halfway interesting out of my brain and fingers.
Here is a collection of some of those snippets. Most of these had to be done under time pressure and there was never really a long time before having to send those instruments back to the distributors – but they are interesting memories of inspiration, captured in the moment of time.
Good headphones or proper speakers highly recommended !
