In 2017 I experienced a guitarist’s worst nightmare: I became injured in my shoulder. My arm was just hanging down, so I had to get help with getting dressed. In fact I couldn’t even make myself a cup of tea without assistance.

According to my osteopath I had the equivalence of a rugby injury, and that was from playing the electric guitar.

2 months before I got injured, I got sick from a tropical parasite, and what happens a lot of times if you do catch something like that is that weak spots in your body will be attacked as well.

To make matters even worse: I was in the middle of working on a major label project and now found myself unable to proceed.

As I was coming to terms with my soul crushing ordeal I was wondering how many other guitarists were experiencing the same shoulder issue as me. I was wondering if there were any statistics available regarding shoulder injuries for virtuoso guitar players, what the average retirement age is, and whether or not there were any official guides on how to physically and mentally cope…

No official statistics or official research papers could be found about the topic. What I found however was a research paper stating that musicians on average die 20 years before the rest of the general population, that you can generalise the reason of death by genre and another research paper that I found stated that 60% of musicians will experience a mental breakdown at one time or another.????

In order to find accounts of physical injuries I had to resort to forums and read about individual experiences.

With that in mind I decided to share my own advice on how to cope with physical setbacks as a player, due to the isolated nature of this profession.

I hope that my hard-earned advice can help others who are either professionals or hobby musicians.

This video lesson is taken from my “Guitar Fitness For Unstoppable High-Intensity Playing” course where I share the exact rehabilitation program that got me back to playing the guitar again, and the fitness routine I’m currently using.
