Ibanez SRH505F (5-String Fretless Bass – Semi-Hollow) | Review by Alexandra Zerner

My review of the 5-string ibanez fretless bass that I recently got. It’s a semi-hollow bass with piezo bridge.
The song I used to demonstrate the bass is available here: https://alexandrazerner.bandcamp.com/track/electric-kisses-feat-franck-hermanny

  • Have you had any issues with the nylon on the feet lines? I read that the fretboard wears down faster than the nylon essentially creating frets over time and I’m worried…

  • With any fretless instrument you should you should start out playing slow to a drone. Play a G on YouTube using a drone that lasts for about ten minutes. Playing each note and listening to each note using a G scale and all the while listen to your intonation. Later add vibrato and sliding into a note. If your intonation is out the band will sound out of tune.

  • I've been considering this bass and your review of the instrument was clear and concise. I'm going to check out some of your music now. Great job on this video.

  • Thanks for pointing out that you can mic it acoustically in conjunction with the other common methods. I like my music to be intimate so that'll work great. I was already 90% sold on this, but that observation sealed it for me. Such an affordable instrument for what it is. Going to slap the thickest tape wounds I can find on this and that'll make me grin like a kid in a candy store. Oh, I'm also going to check out your music, like your attitude and approach.
    Thanks

  • Nice bass guitar, great presentation. I think Ibanez has done a good job here with more environmentally conscious and responsible tone wood selection without sacrificing tonal quality. I am not a fan of opaque finishes on instruments (a personal preference), but it does allow the manufacturer to use lower appearance-grade materials for construction without any compromise in structural integrity and tonality. I would hope that this circumstance would also be reflected in the price, but perhaps that is too much to expect. You might want to experiment with an internally mounted microphone in order to cut some of the brightness associated with shallow or thin-design hollow bodies, and reduce transient string noise. As always, best regards.

  • I was thinking about buying SRF705 but it unfortunately does not have markers on the fingerboard.
