What makes a bass line cut through in a heavy band like Pantera? In this episode, Ian Allison sits down with Rex Brown to find out. Rex walks us through a few of his most iconic lines—including the growling groove of “I’m Broken” and shares what it took to hold down the low end in one of metal’s loudest, heaviest bands. If you’re into classic hard rock riffs, thunderous tone, or just want to hear a legend talk shop, this one hits hard.

there is no more pantera lol
Made me get a BDDI clone so quickly ???? I’m a poor man, okay?! Double thruster also adds some awesome clank to the tone. I love my cheap pedals…until I can afford some nicer ones
Man Very cool! Pantera is the reason to this day I max out the LOW end on the stero eq. I remember seeing them in 90 at a small venue in ohio and then again on that SkidRow arena tour. I met dime at the local mall and I airbrushed him some Throbbin Rod shirts, he gave me back stage passes every time they came through. Pantera and Unsane Live more than any other bands.
He probably hasn't had to think about how to play these in years
i need to understand how Rex is creating that tone I have a spector not the cheap one.. it sounds like he has treble maxed maybe even bass but it still sounds pedal assisted
Fuck this is blues is it not ?!?
Looooove Rex. Possibly most underrated metal bassist of all time.
Seeing this reminded me of how Pantera used to play shows with Type O Negative. How I really wish Pete was around to do one of these interviews with you.
I'd love to go with you to see Rex's Basses and meet him; that would be a dream come true. I remember falling in love with Pantera Rex's bass lines that were how in the hell he was doing that, add in Vinnie with his drum symphony that kicked your butt, Dime's guitar, Phil and holy shit in a high school classroom; from that day, music became everything and more to me.
That dude chill af first time i ever seen him say anything thank you
Dime did play cfh on the lower position Not at fret 5 as rex said.

31:58, you cannot deny that Ian's face switch when the fretless starts playing
Does anyone know which bass model it is?

????
❤Great seeing you Rex!
You are amazing! Much Love
Don't get me wrong, i love bass, played for 30years and mr brown is one of my icons. How was it to play with dimebag, he was overtalented. Was he doing mistakes some times?
