The “vintage” sound of modern folk guitar (for super cheap)

The sound of the rubber bridge guitar is all over modern folk. I picked up a cheap Gretsch Jim Dandy acoustic guitar from Guitar and ordered a few parts from Amazon. Worth it?

  • high action is great for slide, but indeed quite annoying for regular use

  • What a charming, beautifully edited video. Really motivated me to fiddle around with my Jim Dandy. Wish me luck!

  • This is so cool! Thanks for the inspiring how-to video 🙂 I've just bought the deltolux version so don't need to install a pickup – I've never tried before and don't have the tools so wanted to go for the premade one – excited to try the muted bridge trick though. Thanks!

  • Hi, I am looking for this particular guitar, but can't seem to find the same colorway anywhere. Would you mind telling us what model number is it exactly?

    Thanks!

  • Why didnt you just put rubber strings on it lol. One guitar maker is actually making an acoustic with solid rubber bridge… cant see the point of killing a guitars true tone.

  • I did something similar using a Jim Dandy. I put a LR Baggs ibeam in and used an old inside tubing over the bridge once I’d sanded. The rubber bridge effect sounds great. Well done and great video.

  • I’m very happy to have found this video. It’s exactly the same project I’m working on at the moment. I got an old Saxon folk 812 acoustic for free and I’ve been trying to sand the saddle to lower the action, my hands a raw!!! But then I thought why not experiment with the rubber in the bridge and get a pick up on it. I’ve been struggling to find the right gear that included the volume and tune controls so thanks a million for showing me and listing the items.

  • Braving the lowering of the strings? Priceless.
Outcome of all your modding? Priceless!
I guess that makes this a Priceless video. Thanks for doing this!

  • I like eveything I see except the corporate looking logo on the pick guard. Would have preferred a less minimal flourish, looks like googles g logo

  • Sounds like the Stella I learned on with dead strings. I think those strings were like a half inch off the fret board so this Gretsch, even before you lowered the strings, had to be a lot easier to play.

  • Hi, (real question) why didnt you bought the Gresth delto whou already had pickups ? 🙂 I hesitate to buy one … thanks !

  • Nice muffled sound. Just for the fun of the thought. If we wanna be accurate, putting a bit of something next to the bridge will shorten the length of the string, so it modifies the diapason a little bit. So every fret become a bit too close to your modified bridge. It would make every notes a bit to high. (The more you get down on the neck, the more the difference would appear). Maybe the best would be to put the rubber exactly on top of the bridge.
