Are You Making This Guitar Practice Mistake?
Why Practicing Guitar Unplugged is a Mistake & Can Hurt Your Playing
Practicing unplugged seems convenient. But if you’re playing electric or acoustic-electric guitar and you’re not using an amp, you might be developing habits that actually hurt your tone, phrasing, and touch.
In this video, I break down exactly why practicing unplugged can cause:
Over-aggressive hammer-ons and pull-offs
Sloppy note phrasing
Rhythmic inconsistencies
Fret buzz you don’t hear until it’s too late
Bad note dynamics that don’t translate live
I also share why I used to practice unplugged — mostly because I was self-conscious. I didn’t want people around me to hear my mistakes and think that was how I actually played. But it held me back.
Now, I practice plugged in. It helps me:
Develop my real sound
Hear my phrasing clearly
Control my attack and dynamic range
Avoid physical tension from “overplaying”
There are exceptions — finger exercises or mechanical work where sound doesn’t matter. But if you want to sound your best, this is something to take seriously.

Well, I guess it's time to dust off the ol' amp
Thank you for this advice. I’m brand new at guitar and appreciate your video. It’s really helpful.
This is absolutely true for me as well. I often play unplugged – actually more than plugged in, and play horrible when amplified. Also, my playing is mostly aggressive, but when I'm amplified, my pick bearly digs in. There's definitely a self-conscious element to this.
I'm also very guilty of this. Well said 🙂
