Combine BASS DRIVE and FUZZ in parallel for the best tones!

In this video I’m drawing inspiration from Josh from JHS pedals and testing parallel processing for bass drive and Fuzz.

I’m using the BOSS line selector LS-2, MXR bass overdrive and Malekko Plus Ultra.

Here’s Josh’s video:

And here’s one video on the topic by Vertex:

  • So I picked up a Line Selector- preamp in A is always on and Fuzz and Sub Octave through B is mixed to taste. Almost got a second LS for Chorus but didn’t need 2 loops and found Saturnworks “active blender pedal” so I can bypass or mix dry/wet. Cool company making some interesting signal chain solutions.

  • WTF!?! The role of the bass IS NOT to compliment the guitars. Only a guitar player would say and believe that garbage.

  • Fuzz on bass is my favorite effect. Never been quite as into overdrive on bass, although I do love a Sansamp pedal. I've tried running overdrive and fuzz in series but it gets to be too much, imo. Running them in parallel is intriguing.

Also, what you were talking about with losing low end is why every drive or fuzz pedal I have for bass has a blend knob. As for losing dynamics, I don't think that's a bad thing for bass. Bass on most studio recordings tends to have an absurd amount of compression and limiting anyway. It's basically a flat waveform. If that sounds good on a recording, why wouldn't I want that live too?

  • I was curious if you ever noticed phase issues with these setups, like when you would have an inverted output combined with a non inverted output

  • The way to go. I add a volume pedal on the effects side to blend whatever into the constant clean bass tone.

  • Dude! I literally just asked my Sweetwater guy what he thinks of that Boss pedal! I think we’re friends now…

  • SansAmp XB driver. 2 channels. You can blend clean and drive. Has crossover on each channel. Everything you need.

  • I appreciate seeing the wave form at the end of the video – that really drove the point home to see visually how the signal is being affected

  • The Boss is a good option, but the EHX Tri Parallel Mixer lets you use 3 drives, clean blend and change the tone for pedals that dont have it. Old Blood Noise make similar but with 2 channels instead of 3.

  • Why choose the MXR pedal?

It has a clean… it does the same thing doesn’t it?

I have the MXR BASS FUZZ DELUXE

And i just turn the FUZZ way down if i need more clean

I understand the video… i saw the wave form at the end

But maybe choose a pedal w no clean next time???

  • I just use my TU3. Using the bypass as an on off for the second channel. Then run to inputs 1 and 2 of the amp.

  • There was a guitar magazine add about 20 years ago for a bass distortion pedal that split the signals like this in the pedal itself

  • I go A-B with my Boss DD6, it does the trick. Sometimes I even turn the delay on, and it "ping-pongs" between both amps.

  • I have always thought parallel effects are most useful for bass. I use it a lot for bass sounds but rarely on guitar.

  • I got a T-Rex Diva Drive for bass since it has a mix control, so it does a similar thing. It’s a TS type distortion circuit.

  • Look into the ehx knockout. It has a very powerful low pass filter tune to the perfect frequency, so you can blend that with pretty much any pedal that's not out of phase and never ever lose any of the bottom end

  • My biggest problem with my ls2 is all my favorite pedal combinations end up being out of phase

  • hey i saw joshs video as well and…. i was working on an adjustment to my pedalboard… so i was going to do paralell but it turned into two many issues haha so i just did in series, my video on it will come out in probably two weeks haha Gerbil Hamster Records if you are curious

also, wanna do a collab video in some way? maybe a song maybe something else

you kick ass on bass for sure, pulling out muse with ease, nice!

  • I picked up the EHX switchblade pro awhile back, and it has a series/parallel switch and a blend knob (with a good clean boost) so you can blend in clean signal with one or two fx loops…it's radical. My favorite sound so far is running a Big Muff in each loop, one with the tone all the way up, one with the tone all the way down.

  • Great demo, but for me, the LS-2 ain't it. There's something 'dead-sounding' in it. I like the Joyo clone better. There are even better parallel looper/blenders, with phase inversion (i think this was the problem with my LS-2, but the Orthos doesn't seem to have the same issue with the same pedal combo). Some also have EQ/bandpass/crossover filters so you can sit each blended loop in it's own frequency band.

  • I have the Great eastern fx co variable Crossover and it is perfect for this. It has a phase button to fix any phase issues

  • That’s a very juicy tone you’ve got going over there. I’m definitely digging it.

Me personally, I think I really lucked out. My very first pedal is EHX Bass Big Muff Pi. It has a “Dry” mode which mixes the clean input with the fuzz. And it is totally adjustable – I can very precisely configure how much I want to blend the 2 sounds. Not only that, but the pedal is also kind of a splitter because it has 2 outputs – a dry one and a wet one. So it is a very flexible pedal for a good price. When I bought it, I was a complete newb and didn’t realise how much functionality I was getting- all I wanted was a fuzz. ???? That’s why I think I lucked out with my purchase.

  • I've been doing it for at least 20 years. At one time I split my signal 3 ways into 3 amps, which really was immense but mostly this method into one.

  • Great video parallel processing is Amazing for Bass! Theres a Chap who gets Amazing SUPER Distorted tones with the Clean BASS Amp louder but enough of the Fuzzz or Metallic Chug underneath
