  • Hi Rodney! I am 53 and just started learning to play bass four months ago. Have Squire 60's Vibe P, but looking to upgrade. I have been considering a Geezer Butler Lakland and Spector NS Ethos, and have watched countless reviews on them. But, I came across this Riot by Schecter and, to hear you play it, that is the best sound I have heard! Just what I am looking for to play 70's-80's rock & metal mostly. Have you tried the other basses I mentioned and, if so, do you have a preference? For the money and sound I am leaning toward this Schecter. Also, what strings would you recommend (I'm going 4-string version.). Thank you Rodney! New subscriber!

  • Does that bass eq knob actually do anything? You didn't use it here (unless I missed it) and mine seems to do absolutely nothing where as the mid is very wide and the treble works great.

  • Man, what I wouldn't do for a tab/music sheet of that demo at the beginning. I don't even know where to go to learn this heavy style. Amazing playing. Nice bass!

  • I don't thing the wood matters on an electric instrument.
What matters are the strings, pickups. pickup combination and position of pickups.
Have you ever tried a Sandberg bass?
These instruments are build in Braunschweig, Germany, around 80 km away from where i live.
They look ,,classy" but are the best build basses i've ever owned.
I modified my Sandberg VS (4 string P bass), with open pore matte black painted ash body, roasted maple 14" C-shaped neck into a PJ with active EMG pickups.
Now it's a killer metal bass!
They are way more expensive in the US but worth every penny.

  • I’m in the market for a 5 string. I’m leaning towards this one or an Ibanez BTB845 neck thru…unfortunately they don’t have either of them at my local music store, so I am not actually able to play them. Have you tried a BTB versus this one? Thoughts? They are fairly close in price, just wish they were both around here to test..I play metal & am used to a 4 string Steve Harris Fender..the neck is a whole tree on that..any advice on which would be best would be awesome

  • Hi Rodney,
I love the way you handle this wonderful bass. You are an amazing bass player, you make it look so easy but as a bass player myself, I know that not many bass player will handle it like you do!
I have two Schecter bass, a Stargazer 5 string and a Omen Extreme-4 string. I’m thinking of buying a third one but I’m struggling between the SLS Elite 5 and the C-5 GT Bass. What would you suggest?
    Thanks man… Cheers!

  • Hey dude. I’m looking at picking up a bass after a long hiatus.
I’ve just came across your channel and noticed you’ve done videos on both models I’m looking at. The Riot 5 and the SLS elite.
    I’m mainly a heavy rock/metal player.
Which would you choose out of the two?

    Cheers

  • I had an SLS Evil Twin on order for 7 months but with no receipt date in sight have switched to getting one of these, since the store had one in. I hope I'm not going to be disappointed. It's my first bass purchase in 12 years and a significant upgrade from my Cort B4.

  • Here's a question for anyone that wants to chime in to help throw a bit of guidance at me. So I'm currently in the market for a bass and I have pretty much narrowed it down to this Schecter and the Spector NS Pulse-5. Which bass would you pick and why?

  • I really like watching your reviews but I have a question do you run through a compressor when you do your reviews thanks keep up the great work

  • I`m looking at this bass at Thomann Germany, great for rock/metal. Still, how it behaves in other genres? Any word of advice, Rodney?

  • Haven't played a guitar in over 10 years, and I just picked up one of these, it called to me over everything else in the shop. Last I played I had a 4 string, super excited about how fun this has been to play!

  • I love Schecter guitars, at least the ones that I've played. I own a Schecter JL 7, Jeff Loomis signature guitar, from the final year he was with Schecter, the first year that hiis signature Seymour Duncan pickups were installed. It has the finest fret work I have seen on a guitar priced under $4,000, it's comparable to the average fret work that I put on to my custom build guitars. This is probably the last guitar or bass that I will buy now that I have established my own company, I likely will build my own, as I build custom basses and guitars for customers.

I like Schecter basses, aside from how the neck and fretboard taper so narrow. I may have good dexterity and quick fingers, but my hands are just too big to be comfortable on a neck that gets so narrow.

I agree on the build quality and I especially like seeing the larger manufacturers become a little more adventurous in the species of woods, exotic and domestic , that they are utilizing. Believe it or not, when guitar builders use these woods for their instruments it creates value for these trees, it creates demand for these trees, and not just for cutting the trees down, it creates value and incentive for the people who live where the various trees grow to be aware of protecting these trees where they are growing and as they harvest these trees they have a very lucrative incentive to be growing more of these. The wider the variety that guitar and bass builders use, and drum builders for that matter, but the wider variety of the woods we use the less likely it is that the landowners will grow tree farms and monoculture, which are terrible environments for wildlife, which are susceptible to pest infestation, they are susceptible to be wiped out by pests or disease, and far more likely to encourage the explosive growth of pests, as they may have plenty of a food source but not have any preditors in that monoculture.

Anyways, enough of the botany and forestry lecture!

I really like how those pickups sound. I recently installed the EMG PJ X set as well as the EMG BQC System, which gives me a three band, boost or cut, EQ, with sweepable mid frequency , and dip switches inside the control cavity that allows me to shape the high frequencies, and even shape into the upper mid frequencies on the treble control. It's f*****g incredible. I absolutely love the tones, the versatility, and the ability for that bass to blast through, cut through, or punch through, any mix or any guitar tones, and I really can create whatever bass tones I'm after, for any type of music. I not only play various genres of metal, I also play Rock, blues, jazz, punk and fusion/progressive, and a few things I'm not even thinking about. Either way, that pick up set and that electronic set can handle whatever I throw at it, and it sounds great doin it. I will be rebuilding this bass, building a new neck for it as well as machining down the body so I can put a beautiful book match top, as well as putting something book matched on the back (I'm not sure what quite yet). Basically the only thing that will be staying the same on that bass will be the pickups and the bqc system.

I just discovered your channel today and I will be checking out quite a few more of your videos, as I play bass and guitar, I played bass and guitar for around 30 years, I've been working on these instruments since I replaced the pickups in my very first guitar the second day I owned it, and I've been building guitars and basses for about 25 years. My wife and I recently started our own business building custom high-end guitars and basses.

My apologies for the numerous typos and all the places where I fell on my face in terms of grammar. My phone has a bit of difficulty translating English into English

  • Hey Rodney..how was the weight on that Riot 5? I had a Hellraiser Extreme 5 a few years ago..it was just a bit heavy for my taste. Getting the Schecter itch again. Thanks!

  • Found a great deal on this bass last month and picked it up. My first Schecter and I have been really enjoying it. Your video was very helpful in my decision. Thanks and Happy New Year!

  • Hi Rodney, I'm planning on swapping my Ibanez Pickups to the same exact used by the bass and was wondering, if you soloed the neck pickup and played it clean, how far is it from a Fender P bass tone?

    Reply
  • Is the P pickup the PCSX? Based on what I saw online I was thinking that model wouldn't work for my string spacing. I thought I would need a P5CSX which doesnt exist

  • Really wish they made the 5 string version in left-handed too, that B-string sounds so good in those pickups

  • Awesome review, just found your channel while looking for info on this bass. Love the tone. If I got one, it would probably be the 4 string as I've never played a 5 string.

  • Maybe you mentioned it and I missed it. Do you happen to know the string spacing? Also, thanks for the amazing review. You’ve sold me on the riot!
