In this video, I am trying out the Brown Sound 78/79 Signature collection for ToneX by IK Multimedia for the first time. I have never heard anything like it! Thank you very much @ikmultimedia for sending me the ToneX pedal to try out. Special mention to Jim Gaustad for working with IK Multimedia by supplying all the equipment from the period to capture these amazing tones.

IK MULTIMEDIA’S WORDS:
”The Brown Sound 78/79 is the first in a limited series of three exceptional TONEX Signature Collections, diving deep into the legendary guitar tones that helped define modern rock. Using period-correct gear and an obsessive attention to detail, this collection features 50 Tone Models that capture the unmistakable sound of the rock icon’s first two groundbreaking albums.

Every decision behind the Brown Sound 78/79 was made to capture not just the gear, but also the attitude, the feel, and the raw sonic blueprint of a genre-defining moment in rock history. With a mix of confirmed and speculated setups, including alternate speakers such as the 4×12 combo cab loaded with two vintage JBL D120s and two 25W Greenbacks, these Tone Models deliver stunning accuracy and creative flexibility. Complete the experience with Sunset Sound Studio Reverb and recreate the tone that changed guitar forever.”

THE COLLECTION:
– 50 exceptional Tone Models for use across the entire TONEX ecosystem
– Based on a ′68 Marshall® Super Lead modified to serial number #12301 specs
– Models feature multiple 1960 Marshall cabs with different speakers (Black backs and Green backs)
– Details include running the signal through specific pedals and a Vega wireless
– Captured using period spec studio gear, just like the original recordings
– Created using AI Machine Modeling™ technology with advanced training
– Compatible with all TONEX software versions, including the free TONEX CS
– Tone Models can easily be loaded to TONEX pedals for live performance

THE AMP:
At the heart of the Brown Sound 78/79 collection is “The ONE” — a meticulously crafted Marshall-style amp built from the ground up with the exact same spec as the infamous 1968 Super Lead serial number #12301, including crucial mods that capture the DNA of the early brown sound like no other amp model.

A big part of that sound comes from the Fat Cap mod, a custom tweak to the preamp’s second gain stage that increases low-frequency gain and creates that signature chewy midrange and hair on every note. Combined with a 50K mid pot (which shifts the EQ balance toward a more vocal, aggressive midrange), as found on the legendary #12301 Plexi, the amp punches with the exact presence and attitude heard on the earliest Brown Sound recordings.

  • Oh yes, all valve amps are under threat because of one unit that replicates a specific sound. Fucking idiotic.

  • Its dynamic…Seems like you can still "dig for it" based on how you play, your touch, attack etc…????????????????????

  • Crazy fuckin thing. This is like hearing the tracked guitar itself from the album. So so so like the real thing!!!! Great playing brother!!!

  • After the Axe-FX III, this pack comes the closest to my original Plexi, which was modded to Ed’s amp’s specs.

Amazing value, and you can literally carry it in your pocket with the ToneX One pedal. Keep on rockin’! ????????

  • Incredible! If I didn't know better and just heard this with no information, I'd think I was listening to isolated tracks from the original recordings

  • So can I go… guitar, Tonex, solid state amp (orange pedal baby), guitar cab with 25 w greenback… and it will sound almost as good?

  • It does sound great, all sims are getting very very close, I keep insisting in videos that its time to allow users to built their own sims using modular sections, example, hybrid Marshalls, swap tubes, anything desired in the front, we are at this point anyway and best part is if people make their own logo the sky is the limit, so what gives, are we missing the feel, I have two KLON pedals here, silver and gold, I have a dual compressor by origin effects, two SD1s a mod with a symmetrical and asymmetrical switch as well as black label 1980s, im upgrading from the cry baby from hell to Sonuus wahoo, blows the petruci away, auto on, sweeps are deeper, im getting the JHS ts9 5 style pedal wheel I have 3 ts9s here anyway, so why do I keep a pedal board and all is cause it feels better then sims, I have been going direct into Valovitra's sim recently, the Bogren one knob (they might make a full sim) and also I have the Howard Benson by STL, Numbchuck etc, all great different marshall flavours , but lately directly and especially into sims like nembrini brown sound, wow! and NAM Tonocracy all are free!

So yeah a modular sims, upgradable can only justify a price, a flood control system, wireless option would fit the future bill, two expression pedal like 4-8 switches, across not top bottom buttons tripping guitar players on stage trying to reach them, it a big deal for me cause I cant see how much more advanced SIMS and sim pedals will get beyond am modular set up.

  • My thought has always been if Edward Van Halen were to walk into your gig and you handed over your guitar running through your rig who would it sound like? All BS aside the pedal sounds great but it aint the pedal. It's the hands. Very nice Mr. Cooper.

  • that quite literally is the tone. ive also seen demos though of people who arent familiar with van halens playing style, and it does seem to make the tone sound completely different. It really is true that other 50% is the tone in the fingers, because the guys who can play evh intracacies like this really let the tone shine.
