I almost always use fretted notes vs open strings because they also SOUND better! (If you are going for a "warm hug" tone vs something more thin and trebly) The only reason I use open strings is if I don't have the time not to (or if it feels awkward not to)
And of course you also get the benefit of different techniques and control like mentioned in this video.
