Want Better Bass Tone? Level Up With These EMG GZR Pickups

In this video we take a look and listen to EMG’s GZR P/J pickups installed in a Squire Affinity P/J bass. These are Geezer Butler’s passive, signature series pickups and feature Alnico V pole pieces, custom split-coil winding for noiseless operation and EMG’s no-solder installation.

  • Nice video, finally I bought them for my Harley Benton MV PJ. I am not sure, whether it was worth to pay over 150 dollars extra, comparing to stock HBZ Alnico 5 pickups, because I restrung the guitar with old strings. However my first thoughts are: J pickups sounds poorer vs stock pickup as for me, I don't like that there are no foam pickup pads in the box (also solid pins under pickups make it more difficult to place correctly pads under a pickup), jack input is rather loose vs stock ( doesn't keep the jack plug as good as stock one – crackling from the speaker when you move). Would I buy it again (I play only at home)? Probably no, but I am not going to spend next hour for reinstallation to stock electronics 😉

  • Another great review. This was another noiseless pj set I was considering. How do you like these tone wise vs the Dimarzio 60s PJ set you reviewed?

  • I was looking at these pick ups. Came across this video when I googled for reviews. Same bass as well. I bought them and am blown away

  • Hi Dave , thanks to your video I decided, owning the same identical Squier bass white new version, to also put the EMG GZR Pickups set, but I noticed that, compared to the previous Squier ceramics, now the difference in volume between the p and the jazz if played individually, is even greater, is this normal? I checked the connections and they seem ok. I love the sound but this big difference in volume between the two is very marked, I lowered the p and raised the j to the maximum but this difference still remains let's say in percentage p 10 and j 7. Thanks again for the video ^_^

  • I have the same guitar and I have done all these modifications. I still want to change the tuners. Can anyone help me which Schaller or Hipshot grips fit the existing holes? Thanks.

  • I’m doing the same to a Squier Affinity Precision. EMG GZR PJ set, Fender HiMass bridge, Schaller tuners and a graphtech Tusq black nut. Thank you for this video, it was my inspiration. 🙂
