  • The worst is when a guitar player grabs a bass, tells you how to play a part. And they immediately beat the strings as hard as they can.

  • if you want a crash course in writing great basslines, listen to some old beach boys or motown albums. world-class bassists

  • your modern bass example actually sounds more interesting on the mac demarco style song you were trying to do. ends up sounding more g-funk and i think that vibe might help it more than if the bass was all the way in the background. maybe just turn down the volume a bit?

  • I’ve never seen actually anyone else who uses Reason! Awesome. How do you like it compared to other DAWs?

  • I'm having trouble NOT doing these kind of things. I tend to use the same tricks, like removing the bass during the first verse. It sounds cool in isolation, but when applied to all the songs, it feels tired very quickly. But if I don’t do it, the songs feels like they are missing something. Any tips on mitigating that issue?

  • The fact that animal as leader even tho they don't have bassist but they use 8 string clean and i try to simulate bass in their song.
Or even the thump technique that inspires by bass player. Show how important bassist are and show that good musicians acknowledged bassist/other instruments too than themselves.
The only band without bass that i could think of is white stripes but again. When jack white live,he dose have bassist play with him.
    Bassist✊️????

  • Triangle is the most important instrument (even if conductors disagree) 😀 Thanks, very interesting examples!

  • What's that song at the end? It sounds awesome (with the a-tonal bass, not the outro song)

  • As a composer with mainly guitar background and over decade of experience in a field, let me introduce you all to the pecking order of instrument importance (within an average rock/punk/metal instruments sets, that is).

    Bass>Drums>>>Rhythm guitar>>Lead guitar>Everything else.

The only reason you'd think otherwise is because both songwriters and sound engineers neglected bass in a mainstream for so long, most people stopped seeing the difference without a side-by-side. Drums get that to a lesser extent but here it's not anyone's fault in particular, just natural qualities of a beat leading to overshadowing by the other parts of an arrangement.

For other sets whatever plays your bass note also always be somewhere on top, usually the first.

Also keep in mind, that every single mentioned element is still falls under a category no lower than "Very important"; and complete lack of element altogether is also counted for importance value

Which is a rather long way to say (among other things) that it's good to see someone knowing what are they talking about. You brought some fantastic points without even going for a low-hanging fruit (pun partially intended) of influence on a harmony. Kudos!

  • I agree, a band can still run without guitarist if there's another melody instrument but without bass it's hollow
