Sire U5 Review: https://youtu.be/nr-zuh_66ug

Hey Everyone! Today we’re revisiting one of my favorite short scales from Sire, the U5! This capable little bass provides a great set of tones while also providing the player with a familiar playing experience in a short scale package. It’s been over two years since I reviewed this bass originally. How does it stack up? Let’s find out!

This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at https://sitstrings.com/

  • @LowEndLobster thanks for the multiple reviews on this bass. At 50yo, I've decided to finally give it a go to learn bass. I'm looking to get this bass and put white nylon strings on it. La Bella has the 760T series. They have a short and regular scale. The short is 32.25" from ball to silk. The regular comes in 105 and 115. What would you recommend for through-body stringing? Also, did you ever do the tuner and bridge upgrade? Were the Gotoh tuners lighter? Did the Gotoh bridge work well and offer the through-body stringing?

  • Hey I can't seem to find the video where you upgraded the bridge and tuners to the Gotoh? Can you please tell me where that is? Thank you very much.

  • Hi Lobster, love your honest reviews. What would your lightweight tuner choice be that includes a drop D or doublestop?

  • Did you wind up replacing the tuners and bridge? I went to replace the bridge on my U5, but after removing the screws, it would not budge. So I left the stock bridge on.

  • Looking for a replacement of PJ bass with some short scale PJ or P bass. Mainly play fretless Viola bass, but sometimes fretted bass requires (only at home recording). The length and tension of long scale bass is too much for me. Tired of looking (maybe because of being unable to spend $). Thinking about CNZ or Squier P Mini (~200$). Any advice, hint? Thank you

  • Love the sound, but does it have neck dive? It looks like it is pulling down on you a good bit…

  • Is Sire U5 is the same instrument as Marcus Miller U5? This is the only product that matches my search query in my area and looks identical.

  • Those darn Sire's…everything you ask it to do, they surely do it well:) I bought a short scale Sterling Stingray when they first launched, I just love it! Because I typically play 1-2 hrs daily, (just a serious hobbyist) I find the short scale is a lot easier on the arthritis in my neck:) I'm planning to sell most of my guitars, keep all my bass guitars, and likely add a Sire short scale in the next 12 months or so:). After reading the comment from kalvino67, I didn't know 34 scale strings can be run thru the body.

  • Hey @LowEndLobster, did you ever get around to installing those Gotoh GB528 tuners? I’d love to hear about the install process and how much they helped with the neck dive. Thanks!

  • Hey Lobster…Excellent follow up review. I'm looking to upgrade from my Ibanez TMB30 and the Sire U5 and the Squier Rascal are both contenders. Quick question; You mentioned an upgrade to lightweight Gotoh GB528 Tuners. The Tuners appear to have only two mounting holes. Why not the the Gotoh GB640 with four mounting holes? Enjoy your reviews, all good info.

  • I bought a Sire U5 in 2023 thanks to your review. It is soft to play as a feather. Very defined sound, doesn’t require excessive strength. As I suffer tendinitis, this bass is a gift from the heaven.

  • Bought one on the strength of your review lobster, thanks. I no longer have beard envy!

  • Love this bass! Bought a tobacco burst after your first video but circumstances forced me to sell it a few months later. Watching this review reminded me how I missed it so just got another, again in tobacco burst.

I want to change hardware to black. Besides the GoToh GB528s, are there any other drop in replacements?

  • i'm lucky to have a rascal and a u5 – overall i prefer the u5 – but that said, the u5 doesn't feel as well made as my sire p5r – which is my number 1 bass. what i'd really love is a short scale p5R!

  • You sold me on both the Squier Rascal HH, in pink, and the Sire U5 (I should get it on 5/20/24).
Thanks for your informative and entertaining reviews!
    Claw On, Brother Lobster!!! ????
