Rig Rundown – Butch Walker
Butch Walker can’t be pinned down by sweeping generalizations. He grew up in rural Georgia, but his love for ’80s glam metal took him out west. He produces some of the biggest radio-friendly hitmakers (Taylor Swift, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, P!nk, Rob Thomas, Adam Lambert, and Keith Urban), but his own indie-songwriter music focuses on colorful storytelling and significant substance. He appreciates and owns vintage gear, but he’s not a museum-piece collector and one of his favorite tools is a digital Line 6 HX Stomp. His brand-new album American Love Story is a sonic homage to his youth centered around the hooks and melodies showering the airwaves in 1979 (think lively Toto crossed with the Police shimmer), but the lyrics are a cutting dissection of society and life in the 21st century.
Following the release of his ninth studio album in May 2020, the straight-shooting artist welcomed PG’s Chris Kies into his studio, RubyRed Productions. The “clueless” gear dork chats about embracing happy accidents from incorrect custom-instrument commissions, designing a one-off triple-humbucker, ES-335 killer with the Yamaha Custom Shop, gravitating towards a purring EL34 Bad Cat, and giving praise to Keith Urban for pick advice.
[Facing a mandatory shelter-in ordinance to limit the spread of COVID-19, PG enacted a hybrid approach to filming and producing Rig Rundowns. This is the 13th video in that format, and we stand behind the final product.]

Butch is the Man.
Enjoyed this one
Good interview
Very cool and talented artist
My first guitar was a Harmony electric from the Sears catalog. As far as the strings, Ernie Ball Power Slinky's are what I used for years. The gauge is 0.011 – 0.049. That was my string gauge before I switched to D'Addario XT strings. The same gauges, just different strings from a different company.
I love Butch's humor.
Just saw Butch at the Franklin TN Pilgrimage Festival and he was the best! What a dynamic performer! New devoted fan right here.
Butch is the man
Seeing that boost on the tele, butch walker became my hero. When he said he used the volume instead of a channel switcher, he became my spirit animal. Someday I'm gonna work with him.
I’ve seen Butch live several times, and at every show, he’s out in the crowd watching the openers and hanging out. He’s totally approachable, friendly, courteous, humble, and genuine. Butch is the best entertainer I’ve ever experienced, and I’ve seen some great shows in my lifetime. Butch is GREAT!
All guitars matter ! Classic!! lol
Butch THE BEST!!!! Thank you for this!
Butch Walker…love ya man.
great video and thank you to the PG folks too.
Cheer's
H.L.
I loved this episode. Goes to show you can take the Guitarist out of SouthGang, but you cant take SouthGang out of the guitarist. Great stuff
UA rules!
Great RR!
I was like 15 when I discovered the serrated edge of the Herco pick. We must be brothers or something.
It's only rock and roll!
I never heard of this guy before (sorry) but I like him!
Butch looks like a young, inked Joe Walsh
It's so great to see Butch on here! I've always admired him and huge fan of his music since the Marv 3 days.
So great to see regular guys do well in the music business Good stuff ????
Butch Walker…. yea, this guy is great. Cool personality, awesome gear, nice tone, and very knowledgable. Enjoyed this Rundown quite a bit guys! Now if we can just get these PG mag issues up to par a little better. It’s understandable with covid19 and everything.
I agree about using the reactive loadboxes like your OX, they sound amazing. I like and use the Boss Waza Tube Amp Expander which is very similar, and it’s the best piece of gear I’ve added to the studio in years, and can’t wait to use it live.
Thank you for this video!! Cool, hot and spot on this time!!????????????????
Butch sweet intro sweet????????????????
I am loving that Les Paul. I have a 75 custom.
I’m pretty sure the battery charge lasts for 300 hours. According to Greg.
Who are the bums disliking a Butch Walker video? He can play, he can sing, he can write, he can produce and he’s funny… Plus, he’s from Atlanta just like me!
Best one of these in quite some time, PG.
Smart move on putting them strings on the acoustic
I'll be watching. I'd heard about Butch Walker, mainly as a hot producer, but didn't know how good he was. I watched his episode on "LIVE FROM DARYL'S HOUSE," and it blew the top of my head off. Watch "Why Was It So Easy" and "Say It Isn't So" from that episode and hold on to the top of your head. It's coming off! Fantastic talent!
can we talk about how fantastic that bad cat sounds…. goodness…..dream amp for a long long time.
Killer rig rundown!
What's the point of the clear footswitch covers over the stomp switches?
One of the best songwriters in the world – and still waiting for a Marvelous 3 reunion <3
All these rad guitars… and I love the sound of that Yamaha!! But I’m a sucker for semi-hollows with coil taps. I have a small apartment in LA so any guitar that covers as much sonic territory as possible I appreciate
Butch is a legend and seems like a genuinely nice guy. This is great. One of the most talented people in the music business. Also, the Sabre is a $3,199 guitar. I wish I had money like that. Life is unfair.
The goat ????
Butch is such an insanely talented cat! Thanks for sharing! As a fellow guitarist/producer, he's certainly a hero of mine. I even had the pleasure of opening for SouthGang back in the day.
Legend.
