Which Amps Are Worth Buying if You Don’t Want to Deal With Repair Problems

My Vox guitar amp just died, and I need a replacement. Most guitar amps on the market have stellar reviews, which seems to good to be true. Thus, we’re going to go deep and tell you which amps are good, and which ones you might want to avoid. Fan boys are probably not going to be happy.

  • You know as a car guy, it never occurred to me that there is probably a "Toyota" of amps and a "german luxury car" of Amps too in terms of reliability

  • aww yes grasshopper…the world of guitar amps…lol…sell your house and buy a dumble…lol…no…lol…Then a Fender deluxe reissue..I bought one…at the end of the warranty..2 days before the date..it died…lol..it is a common problem, they fixed it and it has been great for nearly 20 years..better than great with thee czech pre-amp tubes….people have been moding these forever..I have a mod i got in the back of a guitar player that you would send for..from master volume(for me with pedals i don't need a master)to speakers all kinds of things…Amps are a personal preference..I used to have stacks..but too big for me now…yup i vote the fender with the fix and the odd upgrade…Thank you

  • I've tried so many approaches to amplification, and can never find myself satisfied, at the very start of gigging I used a lower end Fender GTX modeling amp, it didn't sound the greatest, and was very quickly upgraded to a boss mk II artist head and cab. The boss amp to this day was the best amp I've owned as far as good sound, reliability, and versitility goes. In the two and a half years i owned it I never had one issue. I unfortunately sold it in order to get a used Roland JC-120 from the 80s. The Jazz chorus lacked the versatility, so I got some pedals to compensate. I can't complain at all about it. It's an amazing amp that as far as I know has never had a problem in it's 40ish years of existing, one thing that scares me though is that whenever I will enevitably have an issue, fixing a solid state amp is typically way more complex and expensive than a tube amp. I've sadly only been able to use the jazz chorus at places where I can have the stage volume though. For playing at smaller venues, which are the majority of places I play at, and to take some of the load off of my jazz chorus I got a Nano cortex for going straight into our PA. The nano cortex sounds absolutely stellar, and I would honeslty put it against any tube amp (in a mix), however the technology has brought me a ton of annoyances for live playing. I've had the whole unit freeze on me a couple of times, my midi switcher has failed with it before a couple of times as well. The software updates sometimes cause huge issues, like the last one absolutely destroyed my EQ settigns, and I lost noticible ammounts of gain on almost all of my presets the morning before a gig.

all these grievances have led me to finally decide on getting a high quality 1×12 tube amp, no more big bulky amps taking up room, no more tech issues, no more having to rely soley on pedals for drive. Deciding was so hard, but I ended up going with a Laney Lionheart L20T-112, I fell in love with how they sound a few years ago when I met someone who owned one who let me play his. The first time I took it to rehearsals a powertube went bad on me, which I suppose is just simply a part of owning tube amps, but damn is it frustrating trying to get something to mitigate issues only to run into more issues.
