EVERY Bass Player Needs These Pedal Techniques | The Janek Gwizdala Podcast #339

Even if your pedal doesn’t have them built in, I have a fix to get you the sound that “trails” open up on time based effects. And when it comes to some of the hippest pedal sounds for bass, a momentary switch can make all the difference in your performance.

We get to both trails and momentary switches in this episode, as well as some tasty pedal combos and a vintage octave pedal you may never have seen before…

As mention in this episode, four of my favorite pedals are up on the chopping block, and my loss is your gain right now.

I have a few things I want to bring into the pedalboard, and I’m trying to be good about not hoarding pedals just for the sake of it. They have served me well, have been on several of my own albums as well as on this channel many times, and now the road veers in a different sonic direction which requires a change of pedal scenery for me.

  • This is comment #4… LOL On the MOOD, I have a Keeley Caverns V2 and am looking at more reverbs and delays because I want to create more ambience in my compositions (it's the most comfortable place for me to start with regard to expanding my sound on bass). Looking HARD at the EQD Afterneath because it's a favorite of a LOT of players (I also can't quite afford the Chase Bliss Dark World which is ASTOUNDING). The Caverns has trails on the pedal. Do you see that as being a good combination?

  • Great video! Question: Why don’t you put those pedals (without trails capabilities) inside an effects loop block in the Stomp. This way you could control them on or off with trails/momentary. Also, why sell those pedals while keeping 4 nova reapeters? lol

  • Hello Janek, new fan / subscriber here. Oh boy, I would love to pick up your lossy but I have far exceeded my pedal budget for the month so I'll have to watch for a future drop of something else. You have a lot of intriguing pedals so I'm sure there will be something exciting. Curious to know – when you sell one of your pedals do you or could you autograph it? Thank you for the beautiful music and inspiration!

  • Great video, Janek! Question: you mentioned the drums being cloud based… Is that the Loop Loft loops you've mentioned in the past?

  • Ok… 3rd comment. I loved this video/podcast because the impromptu pedal test showing what the pedal does and what it was capable of and why you loved them was awesome. It made me go back to the podcast on Neo-Riemannian Triadic Theory. It was awesome nerdiness! How easily we can use bass chords to move melodies and harmonies. How smoothly and naturally it becomes with implementing the theory! Simplifies a LOT of stuff that I love when listening and composing (not that I’m very accomplished in composition). I’m still enamored with the stereo video you posted recently… some truly gorgeous symphonic sounds coming from your instrument! I was weeping! And I know you’re super busy, but you mentioned doing a DR string comparison. I’m hoping that will happen before the year end! Thanks for all you do!

  • A well deserved audiance! Congrats to 100k subs 🙂
And thanks for accompanying and shaping my bass guitar journey. Your style and shared wisdom is highly appreciated. All the best from Munich, Germany ❤

  • Just purchased an Octaver, reverb and Fuzz so this is interesting listening. What is also interesting is the drums. What are you using for the drum tracks?

  • It has taken me a long time to get on board with expanding what I can do on bass. I’m an old pocket player. With my current world of beginning my relearning/re-education of bass guitar, I’m completely enamored with the ambient sound on bass (delays, reverbs, layering and looping). The possibilities are truly endless! Let’s go and trust the process! Time and sound!

  • Really good tips! But the bass audio is in mono so we cant hear the stereo width. Ive noticed this problem in other videos on your channel too. Are you summing your stereo bass signal somewhere in the chain after the pedals? The drums did have stereo width so the problem is not in the whole video, just the bass.

  • I had JUST finished making a hx stomp patch (for guitar but thinking like a Janek style bass player????) when this video came out and now I’ve lost another 45 minutes!! Good thing it’s summer holidays!
