Coated vs Uncoated Guitar Strings – Can You Hear the Difference?


???? In this video, I compare Ernie Ball Regular Slinky uncoated guitar strings to D’Addario XS coated electric guitar strings. This is a straight-up tone test — same guitar, same pick, same amp settings, recorded through my Fractal Audio FM3 and re-amped for consistency.

  • Fun test! Excellent playing! I figured knocking the top end down a bit with the coated strings would be ideal for high gain and I was right… for my tastes anyway. Thanks!

  • I actually quite like both sounds, but the un-coated seem brighter to me. I sweat on my playing too, and I use the Ernie Ball Paradigm’s, which I think are brighter than those D’Addrio’s.
