Too much for me. Too many goofy sounds that I’ll never use. Too many buttons. Btw, , I have the Tech21 SansAmp Bass Diver, and honestly, I don’t know what the fuss is all about. I mean my amp can provide all the boost and tone that the SansAmp can. Slightly disappointed in it, especially after everyone said it’s so great. ????????
I'm not convinced on the product to be honest. I do like the way you review things though!
I had the first version..but after listening to this video, I can tell they didnt improve the octave/fuzz/ envelop section. It sounds like ass. Could not use it in a live band setting
Is that a Mono sleeve 2.0 gig bag? I have 2 vertigo bags and they do not fit well in the SKB safe, even with foam removed from the SKB. Love the fly rig 2! Just bought one partly due to this amazing review. Seems like a great flying solution so far!
Love mine , I have the older model and it's been the best bass pedal I have owned , great for travelling and sound guys love it because it makes their life easier
Thanks for the video, James. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a review of this unit and I think yours is the best one so far. I especially liked the live demos and your excellent playing. Being from Canada myself, I think it must have been nerve-wracking to do a Celine tribute tour in Canada. Whether you like her music or not, she’s a true icon.
I’ve had a Sans Amp Bass FlyRig v2 for a couple years now and, as you mention, it’s a powerful piece of kit. Since I live in the downtown area of my city and don’t have a car, I walk to all my gigs. The FlyRig goes in the instrument case pocket along with cords, etc and I wheel my Markbass amp on a folding dolly. Works great!
The FlyRig has more than I actually need for most gigs. I use the compressor very sparingly and set up the preamp channels for clean and dirty, as you do. The chorus sounds good when needed and the tuner is an accurate and convenient part of the unit. I don’t use the EFX section on gigs, but it’s fun to play around with at home.
The only negative aspect of the unit is the noise generated when I use it at one of the local venues where I play on a monthly basis. We usually play with in-ear monitoring at this place as well. The sound guys always complain about it and bypass the FlyRig with a Radial DI Box to eliminate the noise. I have exchanged emails with Tech 21 and have paid close attention to the gain structure of the sections of the pedal, but still get in trouble with the sound techs when I try to slip it back in. In order to not hold up the show during sound check, I have now resigned myself to having the FlyRig bypassed and using it only as a tuner and for a little stage sound using the 1/4 out to my Markbass. My main signal goes to the board without the Sans Amp which defeats all the benefits you mentioned— especially when using in-ears. Even with this annoyance, I still love the FlyRig and recommend it, and all Tech 21 products, to other musicians.
Thanks again for the vid, James. I’ve noticed that your channel keeps improving to the point that I am now subscribed!
6:23 – It's speaker emulation not amp emulation. The reason it only effects the 1/4" out is in case you're running into an actual amp and cab. You wouldn't want speaker emulation running into an actual speaker… you'll get inconsistent and, probably, muddy tones. The XLR should always have the speaker emulation as the board won't have that and PA's (ideally) should be FRFR.
I owned it, it's cool but not great and it is expensive. I prefer my Boss ME-90B, sure it is a bigger but it can do more and is good sounding too
I luv my flyrig but…….please add headphone jack for the road…Other than that❤ it
Can one replace? Yes, but it’s an AI capture on the Tonex One, not this
just don't take clothes, dude. just wear your favourite bath towel, and if you're cold : run.
filming? whyyyyy?? work on your psychic abilities and send your best memories to your friends !!
a what?? a "bayssguitarr"? sounds like rubber bands to me! here take somme of my collection, there's even a fancy blue one!! But be careful, they are really valuable to my heart !!!
Sounds like poop with all those effects. Without them, much better.
Excellent video, James! Your playing is pure class and doesn’t ever go overboard with the effects.
The Fly rig is a decent bit of kit, but hell, you can just use the HX Stomp XL you showed in the thumbnail. It has way way better compressors and tons of tone sculpting abilities. An HX Stomp is way better too. And the octave sucks on the Fly Rig. I had one of these and sold it pronto. I do love Tech21 gear: I always use my QStrip but I think they did a poor job on this one. The plastic shafts on the kmnobs does not instill any confidence either.
Congrats for the video. Recording and editing pedal reviews are a nightmare. I’ve done some and I hate doing it them. ???? This Fly Rig seems very interesting. Let’s see if I can find one here in ????????. Cheers, man.
Nice! What IEM do you use? Pål from Norway
Just wish we could've heard how it sounds through the DI out.
But it's weird that they don't have a cab sim for the DI output.
Love the fact that it's analogue so easy to use in real gig situations. As ever with most effect units 98% of the sounds are pretty much useless; "Pino"; when are you ever going to need to sound like that? The Octafilter in particular seems to be particularly redundant, a conventional Boss Octave and Chorus pedal will actually get you the Pino sound (if you have the talent to play of course) and there are better pedals if you want the full "Muse" distorted synth thing, the new MXR synth pedal being one.
I found a downside – the price. It's that of a used car. My Bass driver DI will do for now. Good stuff though!
Hi. What In Ears do you recommend please.
Great video! Really appreciate what you've done. To assist with the Octafilter controversy, we offer this helpful Tech Tip Tidbit video with Tim Starace & Andrew Barta: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxsHDiJivsI
Put a strap on the bass case you divvy!
Great review. I got the first version (V1) when it came out and was a wee bit disappointed with V2 as the EFX section had not been changed. So I kept V1 instead of upgrading to V2. I was hoping for a Flanger for some 70s style sounds. The Chorus is more an 80s thing and I need Flanger much more often then Chorus. I like your idea with making the Character and Bright buttons attached to only one of the two channels. As the Character knob switches between Bass Driver and VT Bass, I always thought it would be much more better to have one channel of each.
It does seem odd that a simulation effect is applied to only the jack output (likely going to an amp ?) and not the XLR (likely going to FOH / Monitors ?
Apart from that – good honest review esp wrt the Octave – but what was that band / music ? Is it something especially popular in Canada ? It's not good tbh !
you sound great
Love the idea. Didn't care too much for the octave sound.
Assuming that you got some way to monitor yourself: Yes, it very much can. IMHO nothing beats a Tech21 Sansamp other than a real Ampeg SVT amp – unless you're going for a more modern Darkglass-ish or super-clean Glockenklang-ish bass sound. They've been industry standard in studios and live rigs for decades – and for good reason. I much prefer the rack-mounted Sansamps for practical reasons, though.
2:10 Please help your vocalist and transpose that tune to a lower key. ????
Mine just slides into my gigbag, gives tonnes of different tones. The thing with the octaver is that it creates square wave for the fundamental one octave below. I am not sure what normal octavers do but the square wave still has lots of harmonics by nature, the filter still can't hold that much information hence it still sounds fuzzy when the rang is set lowest but this takes you one step ahead when going for synth tones. Still would have preferred to have the octave sounding clean and having to create to upper harmonic content with the fuzz section. I am also not a fan of the gated fuzz sound, would have preferred it to just sustain for as long as it could but lovely unit. You end up planning a huge ass pedalboard if you want to have best of all effects which costs more, takes more space, more cables for power and sound, pain in the arse to carry. The way this provides a great basic tone and gives lots of other sounds is just great. Blend controls for compression and Sansamp section would have been cherry on top. Chorus though, I really like it. One knob and gives a great tone.
Is that true but the speaker emulation only affects the quarter inch that seems backwards
I use a Lekato Tank B with similarly convenient results and change in my pocket for sweeties ????
Man that’s a fun in ear click for that first mix!
I've been using my Trace Elliot Transit B for years.
I still have my old Trace Elliot MP11 and dual compressor pedal from back in the day, FWIW.
edit: I also have the Tech 21 PSA 2.0 pedal, works great for guitar and bass.
Sounds great and would be great to reduce my live rig but I just can't get on with IEM so have to rely on an amp (Ampeg Venture 7) asnd cab. I've tried using in ears but just miss the full "on stage" sound and hate having them in my ears!
Why lug and pedal board and pedals around when you can use this
Thanks for the video. It helped me alot.
By the way, the speaker amulation is always on through xlr output. The button is for turning it on/off through the 1/4 output. Hope this helps.
