i own them all and several other higher dollar modelers/profile players. the gp5 and pocketmaster to my ears sound just as good as the tonex and are not linked at the hip to the horrible tonex business model. i sold my big tonex, small tonex, kemper, etc and kept the pocket master. why? sounds and feels just as good to me. super simple software. can do all your editing on the unit itself. simplicity, great sound and is almost free 🙂
Maybe it's because I've played on stage a lot but I'm happy at 12ms latency. There's a latency of about 3ms per meter from your speaker cab to your ear so if I'm 3m (about 10 feet) away from the cab, the latency is about 9ms. Obviously if you use in-ears this will disappear. I also wonder if the higher frequency "junk" is ignored as they expect people to be using a cab IR. A Celestion G12 IR will probably be rolling off at about -24dB by about 7kHz.
I just got a sonicake pocketmaster. Hope it arrive as soon as possible ????????????
An actual comparison of the built in amps would also have been helpful, but it seems all of the hype is focused on NAM captures and IRs before them, I still believe in the power of building your preset from scratch, no matter what amp modeler or price. Before, people used to rely mainly on the built in presets, and not programming themselves. Now, they've moved on to the next simple thing: IR and NAM captures. I still don't believe in them as 1. anyone who is anyone can upload a crap file 2. even though they are accesible in terms of EQing, it is not the same as the built-in modeling in these multifx units. What do you think?
Also, you said you would never use the Pocket Master in a live setting as it lacks a 9v charger. Do people forget you can use a standard wall charger for a cell phone? That is the greatness of the Pocket Master, you can use the wall adapter or a portable powerbank or anything with USB C capability. Definitely the most portable of all the units, by far.
Dang, wonder how my podhd 500 holds up to a real amp percentage wise
To me this is a very confusing comparison… Switching amps and guitars back and forth my brain can't catch up…
is you gp5 captue nam you used available ?
Hotone owns both Sonicake and Valeton and both use exactly the same software so should be no difference sonically between them.
I have a blackbox, and I had made my blackbox like a KPS
What is the deal with the USB c on pedal boards?
The latency part is very insightful! Keep up the good work! btw I subscribed to your channel.
Boss GT1, turn off the cab sims and just buy an IR to replace the cab sims, and you're good to go
The most important part of the signal chain is the player ???? l use a headrush prime. The main reason l use the headrush prime is ease of use. I'm computer illiterate. I also have a tonex one 78/79 brownsound waiting on my airstep tx to come in so l can dial it in to my taste. Probably going to get a gp 5 and a m- vave chocolate +
This video is very helpful! Thank you!
A note about latency. The distance sound travels in one millisecond is (1100 ft/sec)*(1 ms) = 1.1 ft = 13.2 in. If your ears are 6ft from the speaker cab, you are experiencing about 5.5 ms of latency. This will be in addition to the latency of the device.
Valeton and Pocket Master = Same Company
I bought the GP-5 simply because I couldn't see how to change presets on the Tonex while using it. The GP-5 can also be controlled by an M-Vave switch. The GP-5 has a screen and a IOS app. Looks like changing from one preset to another on the Tonex is cumbersome. If I ever use the GP-5 outside of my home it will be at a church through a PA.
Question: would a firmware update improve the latency or is it hardware, or both?
I am still waiting on the GP-5 to arrive.
I found your channel a while back and I always watch to see if you play some guitar! You've mentioned in other videos that you only have a couple of hours to write, record, and mix the songs you do in these videos. If that's true then my hat goes off to you brother! You are insanely talented, keep up the good work!
Thanks for this video!
I guess right with nam and real amp… But all other was completely wrong guess…
I like 2 and 5 and thought that 3 was ANN cause it sounds not as good as others )
And i got to say that ANN with very long training (150k epochs at least) can sound even better with
I thought the tonex stood out as “best” but they definitely all sounded plenty useable.
I could not tell the difference
Great video, surprising results! I use the GP5 with a Chocolate Plus 4 button midi controller thing. I've set two buttons of the Chocolate Plus to go up and down the patches and I'm considering what to use the two spare for. In the back of the GP 5 manual you can find all the codes for the various midi controllable functions, I'm tempted to set one button to a nice simple clean patch (number) with a touch of reverb/echo and another with a good hairy tone. This then leaves the GP5's own button for green and red(standard and altered) versions of a patch and long press for the tuner. Valeton intend doing a software update so that it takes midi control via it's bluetooth so the unit and it's midi control won't need to be physically connected. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.
Awesome video man. Couldn't have come at a better time. Been trying to decide between the GP-5 and the sonicake. I mean I'll probably get both, but I'm definitely gonna start with the GP-5 for quality, and then I'll get the sonicake for it's built in battery and portability.
Love my ToneX One, but h8te that there is no option for an OD slot before the preamp like on the Valeton, and the others. One of those things you don't realize is missing till a recent update n the Nano Cortex. Currently I am running 3 OD pedals into my ToneX one for different amps, yet each OD pedal is modeled on the ToneX. That's ridiculous. As to why the ToneX does not have a OD slot before the Preamp when the pedal itself can be an OD is strange to me. I may be replacing the ToneX with the Valeton, TBH. Doesn't really sound any different to my ears, and having an OD slot makes it a 1 pedal solution for those looking to jam at home with headphones, and/or record at home. Or even a quick backup if your main rig goes down at a show.
