Add some filthy distortion to the DI and cut the low end while blending the amp tone for tighter subs
Isn’t this just a massive difference in your eq settings? It sounds like the treble and high mids are turned way down on the amp compared to the DI, which most DI pedals have a knob for.
The mic definitely sounds better, but most people don't realize that when using a Pre DI, you are bypassing the amp. You are basically getting the sound of the bass by itself.

I too struggle with recording bass so difficult compared to any other instrument.
Just do both and blend until you're happy.
I struggle with this, but in a live rock mix, “direct” gives the clarity and articulation needed to be heard, but not too loud.
This video is a great example of that.
But my opinion seems to change…frequently…the amp DOES sound better…
