Wow your commentary on the instrumentals really opened my eyes. I’m not really a fan of instrumentals normally they just don’t hold my attention the same way songs with lyrics do but the way you described them and the emotions they portrayed was brilliant
i wrote many of the genius annotations for this album 🙂
The instrumental stuff, especially Willoughby’s Theme, reminds me so much of Justin Broadrick of Godflesh fame’s side project called Jesu. Highly recommend checking out the record Silver. It’s pretty doomy but has a lot of bright, major key moments
Yess, would love to see you do an additional video looking through Hayden’s annotations and maybe even watch a thorough lore overview
Loved the neighbor story well I don’t like it but interesting during this reaction. Sorry he’s giving you so much trouble
If you liked the ambient sections of this album you would love perverts, her 4th EP. It still has some proper songs but it is heavy in the ambient/drone genre. It doesn’t follow a story like Ethel Cain but it does talk about her beliefs and her spirituality drowned out in eerie noise. It’s definitely not for everyone but I love it
I just know that Ethel Cain is going to be a go-to when I feel depressed and want to feel more depressed. Truly brillant.
Loved the story during willoughby’s interlude????
I think Ethel can be an unreliable narrator, but Tempest does hint that Willoughby died in the tornado. So my theory is that Ethel says he left her, when in reality it was her that abandoned him during something he was terrified of (storms). That’s why the last line of Tempest works for both Ethel and Willoughby; “I’m gonna regret this forever” Ethel regrets abandoning Willoughby, and Willoughby regrets trying to ask for help when he knew that Ethel couldn’t give him what he really needed.
"I hope he dies soon" LMAO I mean valid but also made me laugh out loud. Yeah, it sounds like a difficult living situation. Obviously it's probably incredibly annoying to have to hear his temper tantrums through your ceiling… But I can also totally understand why him being in his own living space means that he's most likely is not terrorizing and abusing someone else while living alone. Also glad you were considering calling the cops at one point… I know that there's some people who would hear that horrible shit and just decide to completely stay out of it and not even think to or take any action. Imo, that's commendable!
Texan here! we pronounce it wacko because it's a wack city
Tempest is written from the perspective of willoughby during a huge storm in Waco, Texas. A lot of people have theorised that Ethel abandons him during this storm but I haven’t fully dug into all the lyrics yet so I haven’t made up my mind.
Radio towers through Waco is actually devastating and some of my favourite pieces of music of all time
When I noticed tears in my ears during Jaine I knew I was in for a ride.
tempest is definitely my favourite, also love nettles, janie and dust bowl
janie and ethel were childhood best friends. they were so closed that they considered each other sisters. around the time janie turned 16, she got a boyfriend and began to drift away from ethel. ethel is basically saying “i know you love her, but she’s the only thing i have”!
Hope you’re doing well with your Crohn’s flare ????????
Thank u so much for the quick delivery of your reaction!! I loved the album ????????
1:13:08 yeah, it does.
Seeing your review made me sit down with this album in a different way, it takes a couple listens for my brain to grok things sometimes so I think I’ll have to come back to this again, I’m sure I’ll fall in love with it more.
I love this album so much. Every song is just so good. Waco, Texas and Fuck me Eyes are my standouts.
I think every time I will listen to Willoughby's interlude from now on I'll think of that story ????
