Fun other use of a preamp with balanced and "dry" outputs: one signal (the XLR) is straight to the board, the other output is for your effects. Ending the effects chains at 2 channel active DIs gives you a tidy group of balanced signals, the "correct" impedance pattern is maintained, and it can be pretty compact.

Alternatively, if you're in a band that mixes sound for live settings in writing for a live experience, and the sound engineer mixes you to his preset of how he thinks your sound is supposed to be instead of how you created it, you can literally use a preamp to toss his settings around for screwing your settings around in the first place. –This was literally the entire reason I bought one with my old band. We wrote and set settings towards symphonic orchestral sound, sound engineer goes: "I'll mix you like 80s thrash metal," and I was like: "I literally wrote this by textbook college symphony music format…"
