Beginner Guitar Pedal Setup That Actually Works!

Looking for essential bass pedals, but tired of hype or endless gear debates? In this video, I break down the must-have bass player pedals I use for 97% of my gigs—no fluff, just what really works for the working bassist.

Whether you’re a beginner wondering what pedals to buy first, or a player building your first bass pedalboard, I’ll show you the exact order I recommend: tuner, octave, envelope filter, chorus, and compressor. You’ll also get practical advice on why each pedal matters, how to avoid overbuying, and what to consider before adding anything new to your setup.

I’ll walk through my personal pedalboard setup, talk about the pros and cons of each effect, and share why I keep things simple. Plus, if you play synth bass or need to A/B switch between instruments, I’ll show you how I handle that, too.

This isn’t a deep dive into every pedal on the market—it’s a practical, honest look at what gets the job done for most gigs. If you want a no-nonsense approach to building your pedalboard, you’re in the right place.

  • I bought that same exact pedal train board this year, along with the same pedals minus the tuner. I havent had time to finalize the order yet, so this video helps. Im also going to order the MXR Bass synth in the next couple of days and hopefully wont have to wait too long to get it since its backordered. I will keep all the pedals on the board either way. Perfect size pedal board. ????

  • I use that same chorus all the time. I have all those other pedals , bt I never use them on shows. I bought a really nice bass fuzz for one song in one show.

  • If you want the best synth pedal out there for bass get the Source Audio C4. I used it when I was touring with The Miracles. If you’re doing a lot of MJ stuff all the sounds are there and more! It could also replace your envelope filter and even your octave pedal though I do keep a separate octave pedal on my touring board. Also consider throwing a Way Huge Swollen Pickle fuzz before the Vintage Octave( which I also have). Great synth sound! I don’t use fuzz for anything but getting that sound with the Vintage. I’m a big fan of the Source Audio environment because you can get great range of bass effects with just a few pedals. Anyway good vid!

  • I agree with this assessment for the "essentials" on a bass pedal board. If it's a funk gig, I may swap out the chorus for a Phaser. Though, the flanger on the MXR chorus can do the trick too. If I have a passive bass, I may opt for a preamp pedal.

  • Where you At BassMan Ted! I don't have any pedals. But l like that setup. I never knew what to get this will help. WORD!!

  • I like Ted's set up, be careful of guitarists who try to feed you multi-effects pedals with 50+ bass sounds YOU DON'T NEED IT. I bought the Boss GT-1B…it is a multi-effects pedal that has 100 effects….the only ones I use are the effects I created.????????

  • I use the exact same except I have a fuzz pedal on my board that never gets used and multiple envelopes. Who knows why lol

  • Agreed on the pedal list tho I would rather a headstock tuner or that new strap tuner you got. While I've dabbled with the multieffect pedals, the only pedal that I think you need is a really good synth pedal like the C4. Honestly, it does all of the above in one box. Tho that new Darkglass pedal looks mighty tasty….

  • Beautifully dialed in chorus, sir!!

I got started with just a tuner and a sansamp.

  • Hey Ted you need to check out the brand new MXR bass synth pedal that Ian Martin Allison did the collab on!! Just came out a few hours ago on the Jim Dunlop YouTube channel… it sounds amazing and pretty much what you described you needed ????

  • I use a pedal board, my thing is I play in church and I also play bass in the pit for musicals in my area.
At my church we play Christian Contemporary Music. Ie elevation worship and Bethel.

    For modern CCM,
You would need some form of drive and a electro harmonix bass microsynth.

Musicals on the other hand are a whole different beast. I just finished a run of mean girls the musical. It asked for 4 different basses, octave, fuzz, over drive, phaser.

  • Great, useful info ! I’m trying to get down to the minimal, basic stuff these days.
    Two questions.
    1) Do you put the board on that stand for gigs, or on the floor ?
    2) Do you find that the Boss/Polytune floor tuners are that much better than a good headstock tuner ? IE, one less pedal in the chain.
    Cheers T ⚜️????

  • Adding a fuzzpedal would be nice. Combining that with the other pedals gives some usefull synthbass sounds.

  • I’m so glad you shared this—it came at the perfect time. As you know, I’m still a newbie, and I’ve been trying to figure out how to shape my sound.

  • Hey Ted! Lots of great info here for both the novice and the pro. Thanks. For a great synth pedal , check out the Meris Enzo X. It has all the Moog and Bass Station sounds and can be controlled by your bass or a keyboard controller. It's a bit pricey at $600, but for great synth bass sounds, it's well worth it.

  • I play both guitar and bass. For me I found it cheaper and easier for me to get the Helix floor. I can't say that would be any kind of beginner's tool for strictly a bass player. However, it has definitely made things more interesting playing bass through it.

  • This is legit. I just dropped my "Pedalboards 101" vid, but it is more geared toward guitarists (since that's my main bag), however, I am gonna link this vid in the description because it is pure gold for bassists… and guitarists as well. Nice job, as always, amigo.

  • I currently have a tuner and two compressors. That's it. One compressor is set up as a sustainer for bold whole notes – used sparingly. The other is set up as a general dynamic compressor that can be left on if needed to even things out on some tunes I struggle with. Hopefully that pedal will go away with more practice.

  • This is very helpful. I have found the world of pedals to be a bit intimidating so this cuts through the fog for me. I’ve never purchased any pedals, but after I get my playing back up to speed, I’ll look to purchase them.

  • Still working on the fundamentals of bass playing but I have been curious about pedals. Thx for sharing a basic setup. I messaged you on IG.

  • Hey Mr T I don’t use pedals much in the band I’m in now L.I.C. Groove(NYC) but I mess around with those & a Flange which is similar to a Chorus to me When I do some Slave stuff at the crib the flange fits better than the chorus to me do U get that same feeling about that & if U can at ur leisure go over the differences & similarities between the 2 thx for the info as always Njoy the Day

  • Of course I use pedals, guitar players can’t have all the fun ????..long story short, I have a few pedals , but I just recently received my new DARKGLASS AnaGram..it’s expensive but it’s AWSOME!! It’s like 100 pedals and synth and so much in one unit, doesn’t degrade your bass. I recommend it.

  • Yes Ted, those pedals definitely are somewhat mandatory for bassists depending on the music, thanks bro you are a true bassist/teacher Peace Out!!!!!!!
