I'm going pretty fast coordinating this technique, now the problem is that I cannot go faster with my left hand to match the right one with the economy picking????????
Hi Rick, I'm a classical guitarist, although I've been playing electric guitar since I started with classical. I have formal training in classical guitar and that's what I focus on.
For the past two years, I've been studying picking technique and how to economize my movement. I see that you use "planting," just like we do in classical guitar.
In classical guitar, we use planting in two ways: sequential planting for descending and ascending arpeggios, and full planting for ascending arpeggios only.
Here with picking, it’s clear that sequential planting is used, but I have some doubts:
In this lick, when you go up (to a higher string), you don’t rest the pick on the upper string, but when you go down, you do. In fact, when you play and move up to the upper string, your hand stays slightly outside the string, as if seeking some kind of momentum—is that correct?
To what extent do the wrist and the last phalanx of the finger help in plucking a note? I see that the last phalanx of your thumb bends, but the wrist doesn’t seem to assist in the plucking to much ( thats my problem) i use mi wrist like a little hammer to plug every note, but, i play well and fast dont imagine something bad or too wrong,
Sorry for my English, I'm using a translator.
Greetings from Spain.
It's so economic that he doesn't do nothing on this crap video.
The quality of this video was so good I didn’t realize it was from 7 years ago!???? great video!!????????❤
Very cool ????????
where is your video titled '15 economy picking essentials you need to know?' i was practicing it
I'm an old school metal guitarist and I know that the shred community are big on economy picking. But did economy picking even exist in the early days of rock & metal ? In other words, did 70's & 80's rock and metal guitarist such as Richie Blackmore, Glen Tipton, KK Downing, Randy Rhoads, Rudolf Schenker, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith use this technique ? I'm going to guess that the answer is a hard No. And when you consider the multitudes of epic solos that were played using alternate picking, then I have to question, if alternate picking was good enough for them then why isn't it good enough for the rest of us ?
Frik…. After so many self taught years of picking a certain way ive always been frustrated i can't play fast….. I assuming economy picking will help
Hey Rick! I hope you're doing well. I want you to know that I keep this 7 year old video in my favorites and refer back to it often. Thanks for everything and I can't wait for more music and guidance!
i need tabs to see what the hell you're doing… i just got to economy picking on yousician, and im just totally lost…
Tab?
A simple pattern that will take me a week to learn hahaha
Shut the hell up and show the damn example you numbnuts, not really interested in your life story
This is a great lesson but it is hard to hear the instructions over the notes. I’m gonna keep trying to get it though
So that's economy picking… I've been doing that by instinct and never knew what it was not was I conscious about it ????
How do you return to the 13th fret B string without snagging the 1st string (as you are returning through two strings when using an upstroke at this point) … Do you use a form of pick slanting? This lick doesn't work otherwise
Who else is struggling with so many year under their belt as an alternate picker? I’ve been wanting to incorporate economy for years as I think it’d make it easier the shred on an acoustic but my brain won’t allow it. I’m just going to have to start from scratch and forget all about alternate for a while. Hoping the switch in my brain turns soon and I get it. It was the same when I could sweep pick 5 strings arpeggios up and down then when I was shown a simple 3 string sweep I struggled until my brain clicked. Thanks Rick, great lesson ????????
If i start this pattern with the upstroke, there's no economy picking anymore?
Now I have a better understanding on how Cliffs of Dover is played, lots of economy picking. Damn. Back to practice!
It’s how many ways you can pick, and I really think economy picking super cool and that it gives flavor to someone like me who can’t sweep or tremolo pick lol but I love how it makes your lead playing sound more focused and deliberate. But it really is like learning to walk again. I find a lot of players from synyster gates to Eric Johnson use this technique and I was like no wonder they transition so seamlessly
could you share the notes so i can practice that every day so my speed will increase
I need to learn this is like
Under two days, wish me luck ????
Sir, yes Sir!!!????Excellent exercise!!
Out of all the new age killer guitar players like Govan, Quayle, Matteo, Hutchins to name a few, Rick is by FAR the best teacher.
I used to do this naturally years ago until a friend said I have to do alternate picking only and if I don't I'll be trapped. well, trying to learn alternate picking, it messed me up.
I do this with alternate picking.
so I just found out i've been economy picking without even realising it the whole time I thought i was alternate picking
Man after 15 years of playing self taught, learning a new technique is like learning how to walk again????
Any tabs?
Such a good exercise! It improved my picking immediately. Thanks a lot.
I’ve just realised by listening to the video and not watching you sound exactly like the YouTube creator Steve mould!
