Honey, Boss Shrunk The Katana (Deep Dive Review of the Katana-Mini X)

A deep dive into the Boss Katana Mini X, a portable little amp that punches well above its weight.

In this video, I’ll take you through its design, features, and—most importantly—how it actually sounds. We’re putting it head-to-head with the original Katana Mini and even comparing it to the heavyweight Katana 50. Whether you’re after crystal-clear cleans, crunchy tones, or full-blown high-gain madness, this amp promises versatility, and I’ll be giving you a proper tour of what it can do.

We’ll chat about the analog gain circuit, the three-band EQ, and how it works for electric, acoustic, and even bass guitars. I’ll demo all 10 built-in effects, including reverb, delay, phaser, and yes—a synth. Because apparently, we all need synths on tiny amps now. I’ll also test the Bluetooth streaming, USB-C rechargeable battery, and recording output to see if this is the ultimate portable practice amp—or just a fun addition to your rig. Spoiler: it might surprise you as an acoustic amp too!

Finally, I’ll share my honest first impressions, including the hits and misses, so you’ll know exactly what to expect. If you’re weighing up whether the Katana Mini X is worth your hard-earned cash, this video should give you everything you need. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe for more reviews, demos, and a fair bit of silliness. Let me know in the comments: which feature of the Katana Mini X has you the most curious?

  • I'm seeing a lot of opposite opinions on this… I'm just looking for a good little amp to practise in my apartment and I'm getting very confused on whether I should be getting this or a katana mini… I really don't mind the price gap between the two, I just want something I can plug and play while getting a good tone. I'm an intermediate player at best tbh… Bottom line: would you recommend this over the Boss Mini?

  • "I tend to go off into a funk and never come back!" And yeah it was cool and it was fun and enjoyable, especially your reaction to the T-WAH effects. Thanks for the video and an excellent review. Subbed.

  • Having owned one for a week, this is a fun, convenient, small amp that charges a built in battery (nimh) with a usbc cord, and is very portable. The available built-in f/x offer a rudimentary, but useful set of sound options…except for synth…wtf were they thinking with the synth? Might as well call it sonic vomit.
Maybe a repeater would be cool instead. Cool review.

  • This was usefull, I have the original mini, was interested how it compared to the new one. I thought the original one sounded better and more present clean than the new one.
Won't bother with the new one.
    Thanks for comparing.

  • I heard this. I think I am hearing some rich tone. Not just some crazy crunch. Some really rich tone. Tell me I'm wrong.

  • Give me (anything) in place of that synth effect. How about a compressor, a clean boost or a rotary (something usable.) It's unfortunate but that synth is just a waste of space, horrible actually .. and I don't know if I can forgive boss for that.

  • In the room mic is excellent! So many channels make it sound bigger than it is by close micing the little amp.

  • Thanks for the review. Lots of things to like about this little amp, but the NiMH battery is a big concern. Yes, it's NiMH (nickel–metal hydride), not lithium-ion. This seems like a very questionable decision on Boss's part, as NiMH is known to charge slower than Li-ion, has a shorter lifespan (charge-discharge cycles), and is prone to the memory effect (you can damage it by fully charging it too often). Perhaps worst of all, NiMH discharges relatively quickly when it's not in use, so if it sits for a week or two you're probably going to have to recharge it. I really wanted to love this amp, but that NiMH battery, which is not user-replaceable, seems like a real Achilles' heel.

  • Ordered a 50, dont play shows or gigs so I am actually looking more at the mini x or 100 because I cant really justify 50 now. Either not playing loud so 50 wouldnt matter or would get the 100 to have the looper lol

  • Almost bought one until I found out you can't adjust the delay time at all. That would be super annoying, delay is pretty much the one effect that I always have on to some extent or another. That's a dealbreaker for me unfortunately.

  • so i left mine on for two or so days on accident & now it won’t charge or atleast won’t even indicate that it’s charging… anyone run into this issue?

  • Finally, someone who understands the point of this amp. It is not for gigging, it is not for using with a DAW, it is not for the app obsessed crowd. This amp is for someone taking lessons via Justin Guitar who wants something nicer than the amp that comes with a combo pack. Also, remember that this will sound great using headphones.

  • Great review Andy! I actually find the synth effect to be weirdly wonderful. My fave is the Hall Reverb!

  • Great review man! But Boss blew it with this one, i dont see no reason to upgrade from my Katana mini, I dont like the built in battery…oh well lots of missed things lately Boss. Still waiting for Line 6 to drop their Desktop amp.

  • It's a shame it appears to be missing an AUX IN as the previous model (which I have) had. I use it all the time for my Beatbuddy drum pedal for a lovely clean sound and I was hoping that it would be a straight swap upgrade with the X, until I started searching for it in the X product shots to no avail. That's what I'd have instead of the synth ????

    Love the channel anyway!

  • I guess the idea behind it is travel. If I wanted a practice amp, I’d just get a Marshall 15g or a frontman and run my pedal board through it.

  • Without an Aux In, Boss is trying to force you to only use their models restricted to thaat unit, rather than use the unit as an FRFR speaker to use (e.g.) an Ampero 2 or even a Katana Go. Deal Breaker, and just insane that the Aux In wouldn't be included. No vale la pena,

    IMO, YMMV.

  • This is an excellent review… thoughtfully presented and intelligently explained. Too bad most amp reviewers don't take the time — like this reviewer does — to anticipate the viewer's questions… Nicely done. Thanks.
