Nirvana’s Tone is Harder Than You Think (Kurt Cobain’s Tone in 7 Pedals)

Nirvana is the quintessential sound and feeling of 90s grunge. Kurt Cobain and the band gave voice to the frustration and disillusion of an entire generation of teens and young adults. Maybe more than the lyrics, the distorted, huge, aggressive tones embodied these emotions. We all know Kurt used a BOSS DS-1, and people have been gear chasing his tone by sleuthing pictures, listening to interviews, and just about everything else, but there’s more to Nirvana’s sound then a specific set of pedals. Join Josh, Nick, Austin, and special guest @AaronRash as they go down the rabbit hole of replicating Nirvana’s iconic sounds.

  • Basic question – when going down half step overall and then down to drop d why call it C# instead of Db?

  • Josh, you gotta put out a DS series pedal with all of the different DS pedals that you love and call it the great pumpkin ????

  • Love the exploration. Whenever I try something like this, I never get the tone that I heard in the original record, but it always leads me to a new place creatively and something new is born.

  • you never know dude, i bought a guitar recently that has been wired up wrong and somehow every switch position has WIDE variety of tone, its like one pickup is out of phase or half way broken and idk what is going on but its AWESOME how it literally sounds like 5 different guitars. its a ibanez s series with hss pickup configuration. it has a strong af bridge tone a fat neck tone and the in betweens are like WTFFF its insane whatever is going on, its good. imagine each pickup alone has complete different tone and when you put it in the 2 and 4 position on the switch it does something weird in a good way

  • Great video as always! I feel like an idiot for playing Heart Shaped Box in drop D all these years instead of a half step down.

  • Kurt Cobain understand timbre or used distortion techniques to his advantage.

  • This is like my seventh time watching and every time I'm like…JHS should make a "Pedal X." Better yet, a Notapedalecks. (I don't know how to make fancy scandanavian O's on this keyboard.)
