The legendary Louisville rockers brought tons of vintage tone tools on the road this year.
My Morning Jacket’s Is, their 10th album, released on March 21, and as we reported in our feature on the band in our May print issue, it showcased a band exercising their classic strengths as well as newfound vision and curiosity. Helmed by superstar producer Brendan O’Brien, Is finds MMJ at their anthemic, psychedelic best.
We caught up with Carl Broemel for a Rig Rundown back in 2015, but on this year’s tour, PG’s John Bohlinger checked in with all three axemen—Jim James, Broemel, and bassist Tom Blankenship—to hear about their road rigs. In Broemel’s estimation, they’re lazy—they just like to bring everything.

hell yeah we got a shelbyville shout out
Zzzzzzz
8:18 Not a Fender or Gibson so Bohlinger stays interested for about 4 seconds.
I need to know where to get that "rig" T-Shirt! Its not in the description.
One of the great bands of our time.
18:55 That DADFAD tuning is mesmerizing
I will be trying dadfad
Kingsley "Harlot" is only the best drive pedal ever thats all.
Cleary the host does not listen to the people he interviews, when Jim brings up Baxendale guitars he says he has never heard of them. But a few years ago he did a Drive By Truckers rig rundown and Mike Cooley talked about his Baxendale, maybe even Patterson Hood also.
I love that envelope filter on the steel ❤
Ronnie Lane's 'Just for a Moment' at 1:01:36 ❤️
I've been a huge fan of MMJ since the early days. I was so excited to see Jim participate in this terrific show. There's no doubt he had more influence on me than anyone else out there.
Seeing James and My Moring Jacket at the Rainbow Room in 2003 or 2004 was one of the best nights of my life. It was an incredible experience. I really enjoyed this. Thank you.
Another idiot ruined guitar by taking vibrola off to put on a tail; leaving a bunch hole in the guitar.. Just buy a sg with stop tail.. smh
I don’t get the appeal of this band.
Thanks to PG and MMJ for such a fun and informative rundown! I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise that Jim is a total guitar and pedal nerd, but he does such an amazing job of putting his tools in service to the song…really in service to a whole set of greater goals, that the gear part sort of becomes transparent. He's basically doing "song design". ???? Carl's Ebow/H9 pedal steel demo is #chefskiss. Cool to know that there's crossover (via Ossie and the guys at Three Monkeys) between the VH and MMJ worlds…tone is tone! Can't wait to see MMJ this Sunday night in Minneapolis! ????????
Such a great band, and so often incredible live. From First Light to Aluminum, Run It to Penny, Slow Tune, etc. The Jacket has so many songs, so many angles, and paints with so many colors, they need a vast set of gear. This is one of the more intriguing rundowns in a while
I love the Barney Kessel guitar ! I would love to experiment with FEEDBACK through that baby , I really dig putting feedback through reverse delay , it is so fun ! Thanky !
Ive carried one of tom's purple tortex picks in my wallet since 2015. I was at the very front of the crowd when I saw them play at the masonic center in san francisco, night 1 of 3! It was an absolutely amazing show and I got lucky by catching a pick at the end of the show!
Interesting, when i play in dadgad its usually pretty moody too! Maybe its just the intetsting chord shapes ive found
I love how he said DAD -F#-AD and not Open D ????
Will check the new album out
the DADFAD tuning is an open minor chord, which explains the moodiness. Sounds really cool!
I can't believe a channel named Premier Guitar features two guys being absolutely dumbfounded by one of the most accessible and known open tunings.
I love MMJ one of the greatest bands to see live in concert ❤
Most I’ve ever heard Carl talk.
Jim slowly completing his transformation into Don Was
All hail, Pepers Pedals!
Can you please use punctuation in the title? My morning? My morning jacket? Jacket? I figured it out lol.
Sister Rosetta Thorp sucks. I love how its soooo trendy to name drop her
I've been lucky enough to know my wife for 15 years. A couple two three times every week she'll look at me with the same gaze as John Bohlinger watching any pedal steel player on Rig Rundown and I feel like a million fucking bucks!
8:44 This ‘Jimmy Guitar’ started out life as a Harmony hollow body H66 or H67 which originally had gold foil pickups on it however they were long gone when I got the guitar. Jimmy picked out of a pile of used Harmony and Kay guitars that had not been reworked yet which Jimmy Herrimg had just seen it the week before and nearly bought it but passed. After Jim decided he wanted it I ordered some Thro-Bak humbucker pickups which are the closest thing to a new PAF pickup you can buy. I added the soundpost block inside which gives these hollow body guitars a feature which allows for very controllable feedback at high volumes when used in conjunction with the Bigsby.
