Brand New Pedal From JHS | 424 Gain Stage for BASS
Very excited to get a first look at something new from JHS this week. It’s a replica of the Tascam 424 Portastudio channel strip in pedal format. Important note: i got the gain knobs backwards in the descritpion. ????♀️Gain 1 is trim and Gain 2 is the fader.
Aside from JHS sending me the pedal, this is not a sponsored video, I do not receive compensation for my time, and I do not do paid reviews. No links here are affiliate links, and I will gain nothing financially from JHS as a result of giving my opinion on the pedal. I also wouldn’t be making the video if I didn’t love it, and if it was something I didn’t think I’d use.
The 424 Gain Stage is a fantastic contender for a preamp on my board, especially the smaller boards I build that don’t have the real estate for something like a Color Box which is my current preamp of choice.

I have a similar unit to the 424 but made by Yamaha, I need to replace the belts though as I bought it broken for a few bucks
Hello Janek. Did u already check Darkglass Anagram multipedal? Wow!
Ugh…didn’t want anymore pedals…now i want this. ???? lol
Horrible demo, ear fatigue n irritation is unbearable a couple mins in.. What a shame, it's a great pedal
this was literally exactly the video i wanted to see. thank you janek ????
Haha!!! That's ill!!! Gotta love all these "evil genius" pedal designers/builders! Oh, the record you just dropped is dope, got some sweet fusion action happenin'. Good lord JoJo Mayer and Tim Miller are beasts!
Wish i still had my 424:( I really miss the old portastudio days. I'm not in the market for this pedal in particular, but it's still cool.
It’s so much fun getting insights on how your brain works sonically , Janek. It’s inspiring to cultivate exploration of different sound scapes
Hey Janek you are wrecking my speakers! Be careful please 😉
I still have a Tascam 464, maybe I’ll crank it up and give this method a go. Thanks Janek for this and many other stretching ideas for sound
14:27 Hans Zimmer has entered the chat
ah man, i remember around 99 or 2000 meeting with someone to buy a portastudio and drum machine that "fell off a truck." plugged my bass straight into the channel to test the gear and got such a cool over driven sound out of it completely by accident. never could reproduce it exactly, but i love that there's still gear being made for people chasing unconventional sounds
Damn JHS really stole another one lol
As someone who plays lofi and heavily compressed, this looks awesome… ignore the haters with all their octave pedals
JHS should make the Notaking. Ibanez Tubeking 999. JHS putting a tube inside a pedal would sell like hotcakes and would be something new for them
Best comment I've read on this: The next JHS pedal will be the preamp from a Scarlett 2i2 audio interface ????
Hard pass. Old shit is still shit.
Great video thanks. Had a 424 mine had swept mids. Love this pedal. ????????????????
Oh great just when I was about to start looking for a new DI…
I'd love to hear this just on a traditional bass line – a Duck Dunn / Jamerson type thing.
Bro your so good and the pedal is so nice ! I sub????
excited to see Janeks opinon on this. I currently run a Coulourbox and am hoping this can replace that on the mini bass board
Pretty cool pedal. I own an old tascam portastudio that I use like Alessandro Cortini uses it in NIN. As a droning instrument with different chords recorded on each track so I can use the faders to fade from one chord into another. I don’t think I’ve plugged a bass into it since the 90s but obviously a pedal like this would be much more practical to that kind of pre amp sound than carrying around a portastudio that’s bigger than my mesa subway amp head.
