John Mayer knows what time it is. Getting the towering talent of Pino to play bass in his power trio was an A1 move. A guitar trio has seldom sounded so good.
Listeners don’t understand the incredible skill and discipline that makes a trio work. It just looks like ‘jammin’ man!’ when it is anything but. No note can be the wrong one, nor be played with the wrong feel or dynamics. It is boot camp for each member in a power trio to make the music right. Restraint and exuberance simultaneously. Just magnificent!
As much as I love Pino's playing, I sometimes think he would benefit for a little grit in his tone, especially when doing this kind of stuff.
Pino’s bass line is practically a college education in superb bass playing. Anyone who feels it and plays like that is an absolute genius. Those are virtuoso skills and a perfect 10/10. I salute you, Pino. That is what bass guitar is all about.
