  • I’m a long-time electric bass player that is just getting into playing Ubass. I haven’t had any success finding a video that offers tips on making the transition. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink ????

  • You know what would be a good song for the intermediate warm-ups and other exercises like a walking bass line or not is the Blues/Jazz standard: "St, Louis Blues" (Nothing to do with the hockey team, LOL).
Maybe you know that song? It is simple yet it is a song that can be played many ways.
One being instrumental, and the other with a version of the original Lyrics.
I have heard the song as a Jazz Bop Blues song with a walking Bass line, I have heard this song as a more slow New Orleans style Jazz vibe as a slow song, I have heard it as a country/rockabilly song, a straight Electric Guitar Rock/Blues type song, even acoustic country and Funk with Stevie Wonder playing the pIano. I have even have a friend who plasy this song in a string trio with my friend playing the Upright Bass along with a Violin and a Acoustic Guitar.
But being a Blues/Jazz guy. I like those versions better. I have no idea what W.C. Handy had for the song when he wrote it a long time ago, but whether you hear Satchmo (c'mon you have to know who he is. LOL) play it or Dave Brubeck, it is cool
But because there are so many ways to play this song; there is guitar tabs, Ukulele tabs, and the sheet music to go with it amongst other instruments versions of tabs and sheet music I found online, but no Bass Tabs or Music sheets because you can play it so many ways.
So as I learn this song, and figure out what key I want to play it in, and how a Bass line would sound. I have tons of influes to make my own tabs or sheet music.
Even my Dad played the Bass on a version of this song on the Jaki Byard Trio album called Sunshine of my Soul with the great Jaki Byard on piano (whom you will hear announcing the song),

My Dad: David Izenzon on Upright Bass, and the famous drummer that you may recognize from playing with John Coltrane allot: Elvin Jones. This is definitely something I know My Dad didn't normally play as he was more progressive, but still a cool version. With Timpani Drums and allot of Arco from the Bass. See the link below somebody (not me) posted to Youtube Music.

Even without the Arco (as I don't currently own a upright Bass to do that), If I can make a Bass line at least 1/2 as good as my Dad sounds, and can play it well, I'll be happy.

  • Good stuff, Steven. My right hand is the undisciplined one.. My thumb keeps demanding to be used.
