Superb Tweed Amp Sounds From Guitar Pedals [Origin, Reeves, ZVEX, Greer & Dan Drive]

Can these pedals do the job of the most revered amps ever?

Welcome to the show! Looking back through our old videos, it’s shocking to find that we’ve not done a Tweed Pedals show yet! So here’s the first one, largely in response to Origin releasing the Deluxe 55 and Reeves Electro’s new Leo Twelve.
What is a Tweed amp? Well as far as pedal emulations are concerned, it’s usually a mid/late-1950s Fender Deluxe or Bassman that wears that oh-so evocative light brown/yellow tweed jacket, hence the name. Outside of that we have the expected Princetons, Supers, Twins and so on that collectively make up THE most important guitar amps of all time, ever.
As always, getting an amp sound from a pedal is literally impossible, so instead what we’re looking for is a flavour of the beast when used with another amp.
Clearly there are loads more tweed-inspired pedals out there – no doubt the comments section will reflect that.
Enjoy the show…

Oh, and if you’re confused by the Bass Breaker that looks like a Bassman… It’s a Fender Custom Shop amp from 2002. It’s literally a ’59 Bassman circuit into 2 x Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. Nothing to do with the later Bassbreaker series.

  • Two things:
    1. I've recently started watching you guys and love this show. Your enthusiasm for sonic tinkering is second to none. I love it.
    2. Have you tried the Tubesteader EggNog, a tube-equipped tweed machine? Man, this pedal makes me smile every time I play through it. Ugh, it's so damn chewy, thick, and perfect through a Victory Jack. I think you guys would love it.

  • I got the Deluxe55 as a replacement amp for direct stuff (home recording etc) and it sounds fantastic. Also, I've tried all my overdrives as a preamp for the IR and the only pedal that comes close to doing it is the Tomahawk (with the treble all the way up).

  • I just got a Greer Southland Harmonic Overdrive ????????????❤❤❤ and a Tarpit Fuzz. There is just something Truly special about Greer pedals that the mass produced pedals lack.

  • 26:46 Not trying to be pedantic, just wanting to be precise here. I think what Mick means is not literally 'gain' (or volume) but rather 'saturation.' Please correct me if I'm misunderstanding.

  • Most pedals get some of the drive and the breakup right, but the chime I heard from Dan’s Lazy J , is so unique and beautiful. I’ve tried the catalinbread and the falcon by CTC. None of them sound like the real amp. I’m starting to thing buying the amp is the only real way to get these tones. I’m typing this before hearing the origin pedal. Hope springs eternal!

  • I don't know if it wasn't included because it's technically an amp modeler/pedal but I love love my UA Woodrow, thing sounds incredible.

  • It made my heart SO happy hearing Dan on the Lazy J today!!! Absolute favorite Dan tone of ever. Still pair it how you want. But please. ????

  • I have never understood the obsession with tweed sounds…
Much prefer the sound and feel of a cranked vox…
    Great tones non the less
You guys are living the dream

  • Would be interested in a Red Llama vs these comparison. They state it has a tweedish quality to it. I have RL and like it a lot.

  • Love hearing you guys play the Bass Breaker. I love mine – there's something about a big open A chord at about 5.5 through that amp and V30s that gets me feeling a certain way.

  • LOOOVE the dynamics of that Bassbreaker with the LP. That is exactly how I love to play.

  • To my ears, the only guitar that should be played through a tweed is a humbucker-loaded one. The Tele just doesn't push it hard enough.

  • I put an alnico cream into my dsl20 and I love the tones I’ve been getting from it

  • The Red Llama side of the Camel Toe in back would have been a good consideration for this episode.

  • In my setup, to simulate a sort of 5E3 sound, I run a fuzz (gain at about 1- 2 o’clock) into a Boss OD-2 (basically the same as a Boss SD-1) with the gain on the Boss set to around 2- 3 o’clock. The fuzz adds the highs and lows missing in the mid hump overdrive pedal, and together they do the collapsed, squashed, compressed thing, but with the volume rolled down to about 6/7 with a single coil guitar you get that chimey Tweed Deluxe cleanup.

  • TPS channels Uncle Neil. Just killer guys. My main amp for about 25 years is a 5E3 clone. Let’s just say they don’t suck. “Anne O’Log” hilariously terrible!

  • What is Dan playing when he first starts playing guitar? At 4:55 when you show us the Lazy J he does a country sounding sound. What is it?

  • Great episode! Hard for me to push the Lovepedal High Power Tweed Twin off my board. Nothing has touched it. But all these sound great too.

  • Hi Dan and Mick, I've been a fan of your show for a long time! You pointing out that – depending on the amp you choose for the '59 Sound – "everything changes" made me wonder: Would you consider shaking things up for an episode and (instead of analysing various pedals into 1-2 amps) focus on only one or two pedals and compare how they sound into various amps? I love how the '59 Sound sounds into my Vox AC 15 and it's always first in my gain stages, but it would be really interesting to hear the differences between various amps in a direct comparison. Cheers! And keep up the great work! Best regards from Germany!

  • Great episode, love Tweed sounds. Especialy the proper Tweed sounds, that are proper harsh and borderline unpleasant. I think the Leo and the Origin FX really delivered.

I have one important find (and it might shock you). I noticed it also on other episode. I dont like the Zoma reverb :-O

  • Just now starting this episode but excited for it. I’ve completely fallen in love with True North Tweed Drive and feel confident in recommending that for anyone searching around for something different who, like me, don’t have access to true to life tweed amps. Honorable mention for the Formula 5F6 by Catalinbread too for more of a Bassman style tone
