Fly On The Wall Guitar Lesson with Neil Hogan & Rob – Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot

Rob came into this lesson wanting to work on Sundown. He was able to play it with basic major chords and we decided to tackle it the way Gordon Lightfoot actually played it. We started with some general theory – going over major scales, a bit on modes, then triad construction, before we looked at strumming through the progression.
This included a detour into power chords that got into Louie Louie and Smoke On The Water before talking about swing time, which is not appropriate for Sundown.
Once he had a good idea of where to go with the song, we looked briefly at the Pearl Jam song Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town, which is quite fast and in 6/8 time.
