  • Which guitar brand do you swear by? 52 Week Guitar Player is CLOSED until mid-March. We sold all 100 spots 2 days after opening to the public. Get on the waiting list now (see related video for more info)

  • you may want to invest in getting some bridge positioning pins installed on the bottom of the bridge into the soundboard. cuts down on the annoyance and makes sure you stay properly intoned when you change your strings. super common thing for older hollow bodies

  • And it looks nice! I heard a hollow body sounds better than a Stratocaster for playing ambient music. Try playing ambient music on it! The distorted tone is ok for me if I wanna play classic rock n roll!

  • Angsty Gen Z Nova Scotian didn't mention a serious drawback of Ibanez guitars–Ibanez does not want you to build partscasters out of their cheaper guitars using aftermarket, non-Ibanez parts.

You pretty much have to consult the Ibanez forum and wiki to determine if a non-Ibanez bridge will fit in the guitar.

Meanwhile, if you buy a 90s-00s MIJ Jackson, Charvel, BC Rich, ESP/LTD, or Kramer guitar and upgrade the cheap, recessed, licensed Floyd Rose bridge, most of the time a Schaller 1302 and R8 nut (made by Floyd Rose but not Schaller) will fit.

The Schaller 1302 (Schaller Original) is a compact bridge designed to fit in a small bridge cavity. It is wider and shorter front to back than an Original Floyd Rose bridge and is used in many of the same situations as a Floyd Rose Pro.

The Schaller 1302 is not the Schaller Lockmeister, which is more similar to an Original Floyd Rose bridge.

You will notice many licensed trems like the Takeuchi made JT580/590LP made for Jackson have the saddle screws just behind the saddles and not behind the tailpiece.

This means if you try to retrofit these smaller licensed bridges with an OFR you will end up with a side gap or, if you drop tune, the saddle screws may protrude too far behind the bridge and prevent you from doing pullups.

ESP/LTD and BC Rich NJ licensed bridges are similar.

That said, Jackson/Charvel, BC Rich, ESP/LTD, and Kramer can pretty much all accept regular aftermarket bridges by companies like Floyd Rose (depending upon tuning/intonation), Schaller, and Gotoh. Sophia and Tremoline make newer bridge designs that are quite good.

But not Ibanez. They want you to buy another guitar in a whole other price tier so you can have better hardware and pickups, mainly a Prestige, high end RG, or Jem.

They don't even consistently offer floating bridges on their Destroyers and Iceman guitars. They don't consistently make pointies like the Glaive or Falchion. The Xiphos comes and goes.

Need an example of Ibanez problems? Try upgrading a Satriani JS100 with even a Gotoh 1996t bridge. You'll have to rout out some wood behind the bridge wings because the JS100 route isn't quite large enough.

The Gotoh almost fits, but the slanted wings on the JS100's Lo-TRS/Edge Pro II/Edge III bridges are too short even for the Gotoh, so you can't do pullups once the Gotoh is in the guitar.

Ibanez makes fine fixed bridge, acoustic, and semi/hollow body guitars. They also make great basses for the money (the BTB7 7 string bass goes for about $1000 USD used right now).

However, their floating bridge designs are hit and miss if you want to buy a cheap guitar and upgrade it with good aftermarket parts.

  • I got one of these like a decade ago for $150 because the guy who owned it was moving and had to downsize. Still had the plastic film on the pickguard. It's not my favorite guitar but it's everyone else's favorite of mine ????
