Pantera Rig Rundown with Rex Brown & Zakk Wylde

Original Cowboy from Hell bassist Rex Brown has gone through so much gear. He’s lost amps and donated basses to charity. He’s fostered many fruitful friendships with companies that’s resulted signature wares for war. His latest partnership has him riding high on a pair of namesake Thunderbirds dressed in black and gold. He still tours with old Spectors who feel like home (if home was a thunderstorm). He’s got a proper pedalboard and rack gear that’s been routed through a RJM switcher (first time ever). And he and tech Bobby Landgraf (also guitar player in Honky and Down for Down IV – Part II) detail the whole chain of tonal command. Then we have a blast chatting with Zakk Wylde who covers his toolbox of Warhammers and Master 100 heads. He ponders what it must’ve been like to have been Eddie Van Halen or Randy Rhoads who toured with their iconic instruments and not having any backups! And then his longtime tech Stephen Murillo goes over his rack gear that includes three pieces from Dimebag Darrell’s original Pantera rig.

  • Zakk runs the Aural Exciter w/BigBottom also…but always hid it in his rack…Really boosts the bottom end and keeps it tight and really give Zakk his signature sound

  • Zakk selling his audio guitars jeez whatever next. It’s all about posing. It’s not pantera anymore instead bunch of guys covering songs like a cover band. This is what I don’t like about the music industry in USA $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

That’s it nothing more. Zakk loves showing off his gear to promote in a nutshell. Korean made ???? ????????

  • This is so cool! Thanks Premier Guitar! I went to the Metallica shows in Phoenix, Sept 2023 & Denver, June 2025. I was lucky to see Pantera both times and WAS SOOO LUCKY TO GET PICKS FROM REX FROM BOTH SHOWS! I love these videos please don't ever stop! And you are so lucky CHRIS! m/

  • I feel like the interviewer could’ve just left Zakk and he would’ve carried on talking haha! He’s so passionate and down to earth tho man. I also love that he doesn’t necessarily care that much about the guitar as he knows his tone is in his pickups and hands, and that’s it. Hand him any guitar and with his EMGs and he’ll sound like all the records. I’m not saying he’ll be comfortable as we all have our preferences when it comes to body and neck shape, but he can work with it. Also love how he’s just has a handful of pedals to get his tones, no massive pedal boards. Just a few pedals into a JCM style amp and EMGs and he’s set, everything is in the hands. Amazing!

  • I saw Pantera in I think 94 at the San Diego Sports Arena and it was soooo stinking loud. At one point I felt all the muscle and skin on my body feel like it was going to vibrate right off the the bone. I couldn't figure it out until a minute later when I realized Rex was doing a note slide down his bottom string. GOOD TIMES.

  • Jesus Christ, Zakk, he just goes off topic, talks in cricles, rambles and makes sure he forces a fallopin tube or a fishnets joke.

  • Charlie is a fantastic drummer. BUT, Rex stating that he plays identical to Vinnie is definitely not accurate.

  • Had one of your picks you gave me after a New Orleans show, we hung out after the show and we got to talk to you. 90's

  • I met Pantera in an in store in 2000. Dime played my dime 3 and the whole band signed it. They were all cool as hell. I met Phil again in 2003 with superjoint. I met Bobby too and got a picture in 2017 when he was guitar tech for superjoint. Bobby is a funny, cool ass dude. Couldn't have been nicer to me.

  • Dimebag & Zakk are both masters of pinch harmonics I still have to stop hold the pick awkwardly and cant properly hit one

  • Vinnie Paul: “ Pantera is done, there will never be a Pantera reunion.”
Vinnie dies and everyone is on board for the cash grab. Great way to honor a “brothers” legacy. Zero respect for phil, rex and zack for this. Everyone that knew the Abbot brothers knows they would not want this and did not want this which is why they started Damage Plan. Vinnie was against it up til the day he died.
Personally i thought they should have went with Cemetery Gates- Pantera tribute something like that. It would have been a respectful honor while not using the band name and shamelessly calling it a reunion and enraging a huge portion of the lifelong fanbase. People argue but Phil and Rex…. The point being it was Vincent and Darrels band.

  • Would really like to hear more in depth on the pickups Rex is using looks like he switched to Emg x pickups buy not sure which sets he uses

  • I like how they run on stage. The old school way. The new direct crap is total BS. I'm not playing for the front of house dude… I'm playing for the people and myself!! I can't stand silent stages and I do NOT wear in-ears sore plugs!!

  • Born and raised in north Texas, same area Pantera came out of. Rex has been a major influence on me as a bassist, so I’m excited to see what he’s currently playing. And who doesn’t love Zakk Wylde????

  • I got to play Zakk's no.1 bullseye LP in 2002 when he was playing for Ozzy. I was wondering around backstage before the show at Ozzfest in 2002 and his tech was setting up his guitars. I asked politely if I could play his famous no.1 and his tech said sure. What struck me was how high the action was. I couldn't believe he could play like that with action that high. Next thing I get a tap on my shoulder, I turn around, and it's Zakk! I said, "Oh, man, I'm so sorry. Your tech said I could…" He said, "No worries, bud! Play away!" I introduced myself and asked him about his high action and all he did was lift up his hand and laughed, "I can't play with low action with these mitts, bro!" He explained that he has to feel the guitar and strings respond to the pressure under his large fingers and he just couldn't get the same results with low action. Nicest guy on the planet. I'll never forget that encounter.

  • I cannot believe this episode hasn't got 1 million views. And here I am, I've been watching this 5 times already????

  • They waited for Vinny to die after dime to do this. This isn’t pantera nor would I pay to see this. This is a supergroup tribute band with Rex and Phil.

  • So they’re tuned solely to C sharp for all their tunes now? Or am I that dumb and didn’t pick up on it.

  • 1:20 Chris shouting "Yeah" was awesome lol. This is easily one of my favorite rig rundowns by far. keep up the great work guys!

  • There is something that I still don't understand, and it is because the chorus, the 6-band equalizer and the noise gate are in the rack section, is everything still in front of the amplifier? Are they there, why wouldn't Zakk press them live? Because I know that the chorus in this case doubles the signal, and it goes to the heads.

  • Was lucky enough to get a pick from Rex's bass rig back on the M72 tour in August, 2023. Go Rex, Go Pantera!!!
