I tried the ToneX Pedal and ToneX Cabinet at a Gig…
As a live player, I was keen to see how well the ToneX pedal and ToneX cabinet worked in a live band situation. I have owned over 30 amplifiers since I started playing including tube, solid-state, and digital modelling amps, and this video will talk about how the ToneX compares against other options out there and also whether or not it’s loud enough for a band mix.

I tested the ToneX pedal and cabinet out at a jam recently and I wanted to share my thoughts on how it performed, how I set it up, and what I'll be changing moving forward. Check out this video next – https://youtu.be/inDEMhEXmds?si=FYsbk-cEzfKImoYY ????
I've had zero regrets or buyers remorse with the purchase of my Tonex pedal. It's rare when that happens, and I'm saving soooo much money considering I'll never need to buy a cabinet to find that tone I have in my head ever again.
As you probably are aware, you can capture your own profiles with the tonex and if you really wanna take your amps with you so to speak you should consider capturing your own amps with them dialed in the way you like it. In that way you will be able to get a lot closer to the sounds you like. You can even go as far as capturing your pedalboard into your amp, your whole chain. Yes, the tonex is a great unit with a lot of great captures out there but creating your own captures with snapshots of your own gear with them dialed in just the way you like it personalizes the experience to whole other level.
Great stuff as always, mate! Some really grouse tones from that wee thing.
Great vid shane. You could be the only real life, real bloke guitar tuber out there. On the subject of 'non amps', ever tried a Quilter micro block 45? Its taken the place of big amps for me.. and purely on tone. Pedals just sound bang on through it no messing. You still need a speaker cab but im working on reducing the size and improving the tone in that area too.
I lovem my tonex. I use 2 different guitars and we play 4 styles of rock and country and its great. I love my inears
Era fanático de las pedaleras pero me dí cuenta que si debo cargar un frfr . prefiero cargar un combo de amplificador que me va a entregar más dinámica.creo
I feel the BIG challenge is not so much the sound in your head but the sound in the GIG room. I love the TONEX playability but It lacks flexibility in most live settings ????????
Quick remarks here (not to bash on you video though ????)
Tonex is not more for people into high-gain sounds, it has all the sounds someone wants, from clean to mid gain, to high gain.
Tonex shows its best qualities when you capture your own 3 sounds you're talking about- Clean, Dirty, Solo.
It's not really to dial in a tone from those hundreds of captures. It's not a modeler, meaning the tone you like tone should not be touched too much after, don't change too much its gain / tone structure.
Now, can you find a sound that someone else captured and like it? Yes, but you really need to check them all in the context of your playing / band.
It's a great tool to have, I love my ToneX. ????
I auditioned mine Friday night. Small stage. Sounded great and no hassle just used a wedge to monitor. Very liberating just showing up with a backpack and a guitar. 10 minute sound check and done. Place was packed and we got lots of praise. High fives all way back to the bathroom lol
No matter on which amp you play, you sound always OK ????
it sounded good, I've been toying with the idea of one but they are pricey, an investment for a guy like me so this helps out a bit. Thanks.
I run midi in mine to be able to switch effects on and off individually. It is not perfect but it sounds great.
Don't bother with ir cabs. Chuck a tonex one on your regular pedal board for the ampless gigs.

Awesome video again mate! Love your channel
I have had the Tonex One now for almost a year. I use it in the loop of my HX Stomp. I love many of the amp captures available. However the one challenge I have had is many of the amp capture models are not loud enough even after deep diving into the advanced amp settings. I finally found a new IK factory preset Dr Z amp model that is just excellent. Its very Fender like which works just great for me.
With Tonex you can still use your pedals and make Tonex your amp. While Tonex now offers some nice modulation choices, I prefer pedals and not deep dive into settings.
I've integrated the Tonex into my pedalboard. We run a silent stage at church, so I go Drives – Tonex – Delays/Modulations – Reverbs – Out to FOH. It might be fun to play around with integrating your pedalboard and see what you think.
Hi Shane, I'd love to see a comparison with the Tonex cab vs the Fender FR12 (or FR10).
Great and interesting review Shane. I have recently moved to a modeller due to silent stage and my own hearing protection requirements. I didn't like the whole log in IKmultimdia connection requirements for the Tonex eco system, so Fractal and Neural DSP for me. The tones of these modellers now are simply amazing.
Excellent video Shane, and I would be very interested in learning about how you dialed your tones with this setup. Cheers!
Great review, Shane. Thanks. Hope the weekend is treating you well!
VERY useful review! Thanks Shane.
Ah, the pinnacle of most of our work…the dad band. I long for it.
Terrific review! Seeing & hearing the Tone X setup at an actual gig was worth the effort. Please do show us how you've dialed it in when you get a chance.
Where was the jam? I'd love to come along. I have basically the same rig. Tonex one for when I need portability and am just filling in and a larger pedalboard for other stuff. I am very impressed with Tonex.
It certainly worked and although it didn't sound exactly like a tube amp it didn't matter because it sounded great. I also picked up that the lead patch needed something but that was just settings and happens with pedal boards and amps too. I was genuinely impressed.
if you've already got tube amps and are comfortable/able to mic them up where you play, then you're already set.
tonex is best when you can't afford several tube amps, hate lugging them around, need to DI into FOH mixer, etc..
i agree with what you say in the vid, generally. glad you enjoyed yourself.
Well done mate, one thing I notice with all these gadgets, you never see reviewers actually gig them! Draw your own conclusions on that!
I really enjoy and appreciate your outlook on tone.. thank you sir
I don't care what I play as long as I can set it to appropriate sounds, then forget it and concentrate on the music…
Useful, practical review.
I still like my Trademark 10! The spring reverb is fun. As long as I don't use drives in front much but I did manage to get a decent tone with a very specific fuzz surprisingly once.
Enjoyed the video. Have a Tonex One myself. I really enjoy it at home but haven't played it out. I'll put together a small pedalboard with it as the amp I think. So two channels and a gain pedal too probably. I have the Line 6 Powercab already so probably not going to buy the Tonex Cab but would like to try one. A video that I think would be interesting is to compare a Tonex pedal and cab to the Fender Tonemaster line, Princeton, Deluxe, Twin, Super Rerb and bassman. I'm thinking the Tonex could cover every one of them in one package. And looking at the cost, the Tonex combination is $1180 USD vs $1189 USD for the Fender Princeton Tonemaster. Wonder how the feel is different. Of course it is nicer to have the amp controls of the Fender but much more flexibility in the Tonex. Someone, please make that video.
Thanks for these recent Tonex videos. They have been really informative and helpful. I was actually inspired by your interviews with Dr Ric about him buying the Tonex to buy the Pedal and Cabinet. I think it’s quite good and now im over gassing for amps. I even downloaded the Tonex presets you made. When are you going to make some more presets for Les Paul style guitars.
sounded great mate …..
When I tried playing out with my ToneX, the sound was fine but the noise was unbearable. And the gate included in the software I found to be subpar. It made farting sounds as the gate threshold was reached. I'm sure there are solutions to the noise but it was easier just to go back to my pedals and Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.
Not BAD Shane!
