  • I saw primus at the Denver Ogden theater in 93. Up to that point, I had only listened to the records, I saw a music video or two but nothing that would allow me to see what he was doing. He totally blew me away! It's one thing to hear the magic on a recording, but to see it live, to see how he does that thumpin and pluckin, thumpin and strumming, machine gun triplets etc. It definitely cleared up a lot of stuff!

  • That triplet thing I practice every days as well as the dead thumps ala Lacquerhead. I still suck at both but someday.

  • Les 3 finger technique is perfect for me i found it by accident i didnt know its how he was so fast lol. I first heard about the 3 finger technique from Billy Sheehan. The way Billy does it is ring, middle, then index but that way felt like i was going in reverse to when i learned 2 finger picking which is index then middle. Les technique is way more natural feeling its index, middle, then ring. Billy is a legend as well but i felt like doing it his way felt like i was relearning picking by doing it in reverse. Les Claypool way is the standard picking pattern i learned index then middle but just adding the ring finger to the mix ( not as easy as it sounds tho its def harder than 2 finger lol)

  • I almost have to rank him the best original bass player ever. No one is even mimicking but everyone loves him.

  • Idk I play guitar, but I like how he makes dissonance intervals and diminished chords sound so fucking goofy, like bro these are supposed to be scary or angry or something why am I giggling non stop

  • Les is a wizard ! I always disliked the way people would bring up Flea every time Claypool was mentioned Flea is good but it’s a different level .

  • Of course Les inspired me to pick up a bass, but I never thought my technique had anything to do with his. I use 3 fingers, and I also use the dead note fret technique they talk about. Hammering on and off as fast as I could (and pure luck) was the only way I could get even close to his speed. Like he said in the video, it's also percussion

  • Wow, great short. How many people learned a new technique they had never seen here? Haha

  • I've seen this dude ranked higher than Jaco Pastorius, so I checked him out. Nah, Im not impressed. He can't touch Jaco.

  • Primus is my favorite band. I have Les Claypool as #2 in alltime bass players…only 2nd to Victor Wooten. That's saying something

  • I like how you said that he’s one of the most innovative bass players out there that is a perfect description of every musician that can do the special abilities that we’re all given but something just happened to it better than others. You didn’t rate him. You didn’t say he was the best one of the best you gave the most accurate description. I think I’ve ever heard anyonegive when it comes to a musician or song or band or yeah that was good stuff. I’m going to remember that one.
