Slash’s blues-rock romp Orgy of The Damned debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Blues Albums Chart this spring. Now, the legendary guitar slinger is taking it to the people with his 29-date S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Blues Festival tour. When Slash’s Blues Ball Band played an intimate pre-tour gig at the Gibson Garage in Nashville, they invited John Bohlinger and the PG team.
Before shooting our Rundown with singer/guitarist Tash Neal and Slash’s tech, Ace Bergman, Slash sat down with PG for a chat. The maestro tells Bohlinger about how he found his blues sound on a 1963 Gibson ES-335 he picked up at Norman’s Rare Guitars in Los Angeles. That guitar was copied by the Gibson Custom Shop for the Slash 1963 ES-335 Collector’s Edition model, which he now brings on the road.
On Orgy of the Damned, Slash and company are digging into a different repertoire than his usual hard-rock-’n’-rollin’ fare. In this case, he’s re-exploring influences and old bands. “All these songs had … a very specific influence on me,” he explains. Back in the ’90s, Slash formed his Blues Ball Band, and he was inspired to pick that project back up, record, and hit the road to play “music that I really loved when I was a kid.”

Slash as he ages is starting to look like a Paul Stanley’s love child. Still phenomenal playing. Such attack.
The working mans setup….. Slash's Magnatone 100 watt head retails for $8,000 lol
Slash should do more of these classic blues tunes.
I saw the first Blues Ball band in Baton Rouge back in the day. It was unique.
What exact year is the Travis Bean?
When I heard the Albert King song, I was hooked the second I heard it. Beautiful. And I hear Long Grey Mare in that song. From the fleetwood mac period when Peter Green played with them.
Stoke on Trent's finest…
Damn it, man…. I just looked up the price of a Magnatone Super Fifty-Nine M80 amp. You can get a full Marshall stack for less $$$.
Love everything Slash related, thanks guys! And John, you are a legend to us guitar geeks!
My guitar into a RDS 1900 DIGITAL DELAY INTO A MACKI 1202 MICRO MIXER THAN AMP, Thinking about a volume pedal all kinds of sounds available.
I'd prefere a more to-the-point gear talk with less fluff, not a 1-hour story exchange with some gear topics.
Idk who is laughing in the background of the interview but I love it, seems like on camera or off this was a cool place to be lol
John did an awesome job with this interview. The conversation was super natural and fun to listen to.
Bohlinger kissin way to much ass at times
He's always got two travis beans on tour with him. There's a great video on here from his guitar tech about all of them
Tash is the man
His grip strength has to be out of this world to be able to shred like he does with 11 gauge strings’ ????
Slash has been pumping some iron.
Angelic #SaulSlashHudson
This 335 ????
Slash's name is printed on the packaging of Ernie Ball Slinky strings
I dig how he took the time to elaborate on what a TS9 is. ????
Cool.
xoxo The Clarences
In the 80's, I had a Kramer 8 string bass with an aluminum neck. Great bass, sounded very piano like.
Really good album. Blues, Rock and RnB staples.
Not much more to say that hasn’t already been said, except, it would’ve been much more interesting to hear how and when he uses the effects, rather than being schooled on what a phaser or tube screamer is.
I don't know about anyone else, but I think it's time for Slash to change his appearance. The 90's skater kid look is too immature for a man in his 50's with grey five o'clock shadow. He should take on the elder statesmen type look. Many others have done it and pulled it off with great success and respect. Just my opinion, nothing more.
Why's he talking to him like he's never seen a guitar before
Such a bummer that Johnny Griparic and his rig aren't featured in this Rig Rundown ????
The orange tape is classic. I wear Rx glasses, don't know if Slash does, but working with them on and sweating, nice to know where the runway is.
That pedal board is a mess ???? I love it.
Does anyone know why Adam Day isn't his tech anymore?
I’m hoping that Slash tours with this band. Tash is an awesome front man for this particular band. I was 17 when Appetite came out and it changed my life. I’m so happy that Slash, Duff, Steven, Izzy and Axl survived those tumultuous years.
