  • Greetings Rich. I'm just a 4 string guy but I'm glad you are doing this because I know that there are a lot of folks looking just for this, so on behalf of our 6-string brothers and sisters – many thanks!

  • I just picked up a 6 after playing 5 exclusively for the better part of 20 years. It's a whole new beast! I've been going to a local jam for a couple of months, and lots of players use a 6. They sound amazing! I keep chickening out and bringing a 5. I've made it my goal to take the 6 before the end of the year. Great lesson!

  • Your pattern really helped me to start grasping the fret board. Before, it was just way too much chaos to see at once. For others:
    00-00-00
    11-22-22
    33-33-44
5th fret———————-We've used 4 frets, what happens on the 5th? We shift the pattern 1 column too the left. We only need too worry about the new added column: another 0,2,4
    0-00-00-0
    1-22-22-2
    3-33-44-4
10thfret—————–we've used 9 frets, shift pattern left again, at the tenth the new is 1,2,4 (dodges a sharp)
    00-00-0-1
    22-22-2-2
    33-44-4-4
    15th fret———— add another 1,2,4
    0-00-0-11
    2-22-2-22
    3-44-4-44
20th fret —————— would start the origin of the pattern (aflat), but if we skip to the next fret
21st fret——————————–we see how the end of the vertical repeating pattern looping introduces an extra skip in the middle strings, reaching 5 instead of 4
    00-00-0-1
    22-33-3-2
    44-55-5-4

once you see that, it helps untangle vertical pattern vs the string count. Vertical repeating aflat, A, bflat, B, C, dflat, D, eflat, E, F, gflat, G – repeat.

  • Hey Rich, I just wanted to tell you how much I admire your work. I've been playing bass for 30 years and teaching for 15, and I also have a channel on YouTube teaching various musical subjects. I love how relaxed you are and how authentic your presentation is. My style is totally different, but I think yours is much more effective and sincere and I just wanted to commend you for that. Feel free to reach out to me directly if you want to talk about teaching bass.

  • Lol well, I am one such brave soul XD sort of. Coming from the seven-string guitar, it just felt right starting off with a six string bass: same string arrangement, wide neck (a 4 string bass feels like I'm playing air guitar with a broom…) and that sweet, sweet low register. Just started, so time will tell whether I was smart, or a fool. Thanks for the tutorials 🙂

  • Went to a music store with my mom and saw a 6 string bass (I’m an amateur guitar player, I don’t know wtf I’m getting myself into.)

  • I played a bit in high school on 4 string bass guitar and upright. I’ve had some crappy project basses I’ve converted to fretless over the years for fun.

I just picked up a 6 string fretless. I reckon I’m one of them ones ????

I said this white boy’s gonna play some funky music

  • I guess I got lucky, today. I'm buying my first bass, and I found out that KLOS still can't start making my 6-string. So, I was able to switch my order to a 5-string. Then, to help myself out a little more, I ordered a 4-string. I'd still like to have a 6-string, someday – fretless and flatwound! But, I'm not enough of a daredevil, yet. ❤

  • I have a 6 string, which I'm using to learn bass. It seems daunting trying to master the fretboard, and know each note by heart. Not to mention playing songs by ear or creating your own lines.

  • That was incredibly helpful. I played 4 string exclusively in drop D tuning a life time ago. I picked up bass again last year and this year I got a 6 string. That Squier Jazz 6 string was too cheap to not pick up. Anyway thanks for the exercise. I think it is going make thinking across the strings and not up and down the neck more intuitive.

  • My wife got me a six string bass for my Christmas gift last year and I said, "why?" LOL. I have been intimidated by the 6 stringer, but the Harley Benton sounds so good and for some reason, my logic is it will make me a better bass player overall if I can adapt to the six string bass. I'm grateful for your videos. Thank you and subscribed!

  • I love your lessons and learning what you have to offer. The fact that, in this video, you point out one of your own shortcomings and also direct us to other instructors speaks to your honesty and humility as a musician and a person. This is why i always point folks towards The Brownstone when they ask for YouTube instructors to follow.

  • transitioned from 6 string guitar. i could never get the hang of the highest two strings… 6 string bass opened up the whole fretboard for me because they dont skip any steps in tuning. i had to buy one and ive never put it down. learning to drop the pick was hardest, and continues to be my biggest challenge, yet biggest triumph. the more i learn the more i feel like the pick was a crutch.

  • The D Major scale continued pattern.. Is that the same thing in the modes you teach for 6 string bass

  • This might be controversial but as a six string bass player, the best way to see it is like a four string with two extra strings. Unlike a six string guitar the tuning is simple. Having said that you can tune a guitar anyway you like

  • Just found this video. Great content and amazing exercises. I jumped from 4 to 6 a few years ago and since then it feels home. The right hand technique takes time to get used to, but once you do it helps a lot navigating through the neck, keeping the right tone regardless, and using three fingers for playing faster (if you're into that)

  • Hey Rich! I play blues, lots of Beth Hart. I write my own bass lines. I want to do this on the 6. Would you help?

  • I decided during Covid that I was finally going to take up bass. Today, I saw a six-string that is stunning. Watching this video I thought to myself, "I could practice this". Finding instructors near me has been a journey but I think it will happen. Thansk for the great video.

  • Hey Rich! Thank you for posting this video. I've started playing and mainly playing in our church for the past 8 months with a 4s and recently got a 6s (early January 2024). This is very helpful insight with the 6s. I got a question though. How do I get a tighter or thicker sound on my G and C strings? I'm using DR Fatbeams but those strings sound so thin to me. Hope to get a response from you. Thank you!

  • Started with 4 string bass. Was given lots of piano music for bass lines at church. Guitar player sometimes was not available and so had to chord. So, I picked up an Ibanez GVB 36 6 string and it has been my goto bass ever since. Thanks for tips and exercises for 6 string bass!
