In my opinion, using a crunchy guitar sound with just a touch of overdrive is essential to get close to his sound, but the guitar must always maintain its acoustic nature, without getting too dirty. People often tend to overuse overdrive or distortion because increasing the gain makes it much easier to perform those fast and acrobatic guitar techniques, but I have always seen Jimmy Page as an acoustic guitarist who just happens to play an electric guitar. In fact, the arrangements of many of his songs can be played perfectly on an acoustic guitar. His eclecticism, the fact that his mind is always one step ahead of his technical ability, is where his magic comes from. Yes, he gets stuck. But what a wonderful way to get stuck. An absolute genius.
