Paul on a Jazz Bass was something else… Prudence, Gently Weeps, Glass Onion… it just keeps going.
That's also a Cliff Burton-ism. "Do not start on the root." I mean, sometimes you have to — in fact you usually should, just so when you start on a third you can really highlight it.
Bad ass for starting on the 5th of the chord? Inverting chords is common in bass writing. It is a great line but starting on the 5th is not the only or main reason. The embedded slide and the descending line is more salient.

Always thought the bassline on Dont let me down is one of his best, just for the simplicity of it and the way it rolls with the groove. That might just be me though
If you listen to John's guitar part in drop D, the picking pattern starts with the V (instead of the I, which most of us would have done). Perhaps Paul was working off of that…

Macca is so under rated on bass. His knarly bass on hackney Diamonds rolling stones album track is amazing. A true genius.
