The Los Angeles League of Musicians—LA LOM for short—brought the vintage vibe with them on the road last year.
It wasn’t long ago that LA LOM—guitarist Zac Sokolow, bassist Jake Faulkner, and percussionist Nicholas Baker—were cutting their teeth together as the house band at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, playing poolside for guests. Now, with eight EPs and a full-length record (2024’s The Los Angeles League of Musicians) since 2021, they’re a full-blown sensation, celebrating and interpreting the instrumental traditions of cumbia and Peruvian chicha.
The trio played Nashville’s The Basement back in December, where PG’s John Bohlinger caught up with Sokolow and Faulkner to see what road rigs they use to bring their psychedelic cumbia dream to life.

This dudes kill it man! Muy buena la adaptacion de esta musica a la actualidad
I presume Zac's dad is Fred Sokolow? I think I have a few of his tuition books. (edit – just seen someone's similar comment down below)
This is not a ding at all, but I love that he tends to use pretty cheap and accessible equipment. Kay Electric guitar you can find for $500. Regular boss pedal. Pedal board is a piece of plywood. On their Trail Mix video, he is playing a crappy Kay acoustic. It really shows that just because you have cheap gear, doesnt mean you cant make good music. It may not be the right tool for what you want to do, but alot of cheap guitars have a sound that can be excellent when used in the right spot.
I love this video. I can barely play, but I'm worried about every technical aspect of my guitar, and what pots I have, and the tone settings, etc, etc. Zac's tone knobs aren't even hooked up, and he has a single pickup, but he just plays, and it sounds amazing. Just play..
John is the sweetest
Great pick ….interviewing this band
Thank you John
I keep waiting and waiting for La Lom to come to Peru. Given their influences, hopefully they come down here at some point. It was cool seeing Zac run through his equipment. Great video.
"..this is still Jake's guitar…"
????
"But, its your #1?"
Just found out Zac is Fred Sokolow’s son. No wonder! Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Juana Le Cubana is a great cover by them. Get's the whole crowd moving.
Love the rundown from the band. Always so tired of the tool that does these being a know it all and interrupting constantly making it about himself. Good grief man we're here for the band! Shut up!
Fkn love this band!
saw them in munich in february after listening to them the whole past year. such cool guys with awesome music and style!????????
This band is so good it hurts.
Thanks Premier Guitar for the great LA LOM rig insight! Zac's guitars are not expensive brand names but simple and unique, which goes to show it's not the guitar brand it's the guitar player. Zac is a phenomenal player, you feel the passion come through his and the others playing vibes. It's really great to see LA LOM get the love they deserve, definitely one of my favorite bands to watch and lsiten!
Did they skip the Voicetone and the PG&E Snake Bite Kit?
Awesome and very interesting. Love La Lom
can we just get Zac to play for a bit longer in the intro damn that was smooth!!!!
That intro version of cielo Stellato is incredibly beautiful! I would freak out if anybody could make the tabs for this! I love zacs style and playing so much! It s really influences my playing!
Greetings from Germany
Absolutely on cue, as I was searching for the guitarist's gear
Super groupe LA LOM. Venez en France les gars !
These guys are one of the first newer bands I heard that I have connected with. They have a great sound, atmospheric sound.
Please continue to ask about strings and the string gauges as you guys used to and years ago gave up on gauges, string brands and special tunings or even if they are tuned down half a step and thats important information.
Love almost all rundowns but this was a breath of fresh air, thank you PG.
i love LA LOM… THANKS ????
YESSS LA LOM!!!! I BEEN WAITIN ON THIS ONE WOOHOOO
Zac backed up his Dad on lesson vids back in the day, great musical family.
Those 1940s outfits are so great.
Finally!!!!
Thank you so much!!!
Zac's dad Fred Sokolow put out some of the best instructional videos before YouTube took off. Finally learned the caged system and how to play out of chords. On one $24 DVD, I learned more than years of lessons. I literally struggled for years and was 10x better in one year from his videos. And Zach used to be in some of them, so it's also so great to see him doing so well, and another great video! Hope to see them live.
Intro song?
Really, fulltone? No, all is not forgiven. BLACK LIVES MATTER.
So happy to see this RR with La Lom!! Great band with beautiful energy and sound!! Their "Baby Baby" cover is what introduced me to them. Much love and appreciation, La Lom and PG!! "So cool"
Saw these guys at the Thunderbird in Pgh. Go. See. This. Band.
These guys never disappoint. Hope to catch them live someday.
Saw La Lom in San Antonio, TX and they absolutely killed it! Love this band. Great to see it
Great Rig Rundown. I've never heard of this band but will definitely check them out. Thanks PG!
La Lom is the best band ever!!! Hands down so glad we finally get this rundown
Fantastic band!
