In this video, I show you my favorite overdrive pedals when it comes to getting a great Stratocaster tone for Blues guitar. Each of these pedals works extremely well for rhythm and lead guitar. I have reviewed each of these effects on my channel already so if you search for the pedal name plus my channel name it’ll pop right up.

Time codes:
0:00 – About this video
0:40 – Jam Track

The pedals are:
Pedal 1: VS Audio Royal Flush
Pedal 2: Buffalo FX Carrerra Overdrive
Pedal 3: Crazy Tube Circuits Stardust
Pedal 4: Maxon APEX 808 (Tamura)

  • I thought it was about time for a little bit of blues! These are the pedals I am using the most now and over the last few years. What's your go-to pedal for blues guitar?

  • Barber Gain Changer S.R. – just Trust Me – I am amazed . . . every-time I step on this thing. In this video I did like the Royal Flush and the Maxon. oNe LovE from NYC

  • These tones you have are perfect for Blues. Can't stand it when an overdrive becomes obtrusive and fuzzy.

  • Usually use a JHS Morning Glory which is transparent, very light like the ones you have here….next would be a Keeley Super Phat which is the remoded lighter, smoother version of Boss Blues Driver. But you get a gorgeous sound on here. This is the sound I like most of all.

  • What up Shane!! Very tasteful and very soulful. I love that strat by the way, the video where you opened that guitar was what got me hooked on your channel. I just built a warmoth Strat with some unique features and I’m gonna post a video soon.

  • Man this royal flush got me. I found one for 130€ used. But I need to kick 2 pedals of my board to get space for it. Do you think I can get rid of an tubescreamer (never loved it) and a soul food as a tonal replacement?

  • At the beginning I thought you were kosher, but like 99% of people today it is all smoke and mirrors, nobody is truthful anymore. When reviewing various amps. and other equipment we do not see what is going on behind the scenes. As an Australian bit disappointed. I thought we were better than the rest. It is All About The Money. Regards Gerald

  • Hi man,

    Thanks for the video.

Just post a doubt that i really apreciate if you answer on your website (https://guitarspeakerguide.com/5-best-marshall-dsl40cr-speakers/)

The thing have total relation with the video – bought a creamback 75 for my marshal dsl and, althought amazing, i lost the blues characteristcs of the amp (playing with texas specials).

Thanks in advance for all the information of the website, its very very useful and helpful.

  • Nice tones here. One question, How often do you restring your guitars? brand? Your sound is always clean, metallic, pleasant…

  • Close call between the maxon and the carrera for me. I like simplicity. And that the carrera has a bass control may make it a bit more versatile.

  • You have been playing that Royal Flush forever ! You are going to force me to try one yet mate ! I enjoyed this a lot ,still have that Maxon in my cart but ,it's hard to spend that much on a pedal for me ! Cheers ! ????????

  • Thanks Shane. Good video. Btw, nice job on the drums. And a shuffle, no less! You and I are opposite – I’m a drummer first, guitar player second.

  • Good stuff! Inspired me to use a pedal (Boss BD-2 Waza on standard setting) on a blues lead I'm working on with a Fender amp???? Cheers!

  • Those pedals and that guitar would sound amazing plugged into a Two Rock Crystal. Chimey ! Blues On….???? LOL ????

  • I've recently got a Bogner Ecstacy Blue mini and on the low gain it does a great blues drive. It has a 3 band as well so you can push the mids to make it tube screamer-like or have it more transparent ????

  • Nice. I don't really have a fav pedal for Blues. I like the Royal Flush but they aren't for sale over here.

  • Nice sounds and nice playing – did you see the vid from Tim Pierce about getting the same tone with more headoom turning up the amp and playing softer – he has tons of experince.
I have a T-Rex Moller 2 drive its like a tube screamer on steroids combined with separete clean boost – it also have tone knob and a bass boost switch – so pretty versatile

  • My blues staples:
    MI Audio Boost 'n Buff
    MI Audio Super Blues Pro
    MI Audio Blue Boy Deluxe
    Xotic Effects AC Booster
    Jetter Traindrive
    Keeley SPMge
    Vick Audio Mount Pleasant.

If I could only take one…toss up between the Xotic and the Keeley. The MI Audio pedals stack amazingly well.
…and I always keep a Digitech Bad Monkey in my gig bag, just in case. Has a decent cab em and is just a great TS style pedal.

I've excluded fuzz as all of Shane's picks were overdrive pedals.

  • Ok before I watch I'll bet everything I own that #1 is the Royal Flush.
And now to find out if I'm destitute or not…

  • Only been playing for less then a year, thus far Ive played it pretty safe using a knock off Blues driver and Tubescreamer. Do want to add something with a lil more grit next. A distortion or fuzz will be my next buy as it relates to Od's.

  • I have a Soul Food (kinda Klon clone), a TS 9, Snouse 3 knob Black Box (hardwired Bluesbreaker clone, and a Barber Small Fry….between them it covers a lot of different sonic territory.
