I have a SE custom with a SH5 in the bridge and a SH2 in the neck. Out of my 8 guitars it’s the one I pick up the most often. Whenever I’m just sitting down and opening a new DAW session to write I always have my SE in hand. It’s just so comfortable and playable. I have much more expensive guitars, and while those do end up on final recordings more often, my $800 PRS is by far my most played guitar.
This may sound superficial, but nobody cool plays a PRS. When I think of the brand, I think of nu metal, 2000s butt rock and modern wanky blues players
Never heard anyone say they grabbed a PRS for a studio session.
Great ,thorough review, great playingas always.
While I have 15 PRS guitars, the Custom 24's have never done it for me , hate the neck .
Santana for 24 frets ..life is bliss. KL-33 with a tap .. golden
Admit it, you just don’t like the birds.
With the demise of brick and mortar guitar retailers, it’s hard to find a way to try dozens of guitars to find one that has “mojo”, “vibes” or “character”.
A guitar that can be ordered over the internet and have an extremely high probability of showing up with excellent quality when you press the “buy” button is a blessing.
I hate your take on PRS. You dislike them because they’re all consistently quality and solve common problems with Gibsons and Fenders
Every time you pickup one of those beautiful guitars I can hear a clonk sound. I’m not sure but I think it’s your rings banging on them. If it is, please be more careful. Also, smacking the selector switch up and down like that seems like you’re treating the guitar very dismissively almost contemptuously.
200 dollar guitars with 4k tops. The neck joints are stupid and the inlays are silly. Not a dan of thir guitars. The tremonti models are ok but thats bout it to me.
I have a prs se, it'd ok
Man, this is like being a size 9 and trying a bunch of size 11s of a new brand and saying none of them fit. Ignoring body shape, you picked a bunch of guitars with the same neck profile and the same "flavour" of pickup, with the exception of the one that stood out. If you played some single cuts, a Mira maybe, or basically any vintage leaning PRS with a wide fat neck and 57/08 or 58/15 style pickups you'd have an entirely different experience.
I get the point about vibe and individuality of the guitar but in an age when physical guitar stores are closing every day, prices are through the goddamn roof and no one has the time to shlep between the few stores that are left, it's completely unrealistic to expect a consumer to "find" the one not-shit guitar that poor quality control permitted. I'd go as far as to argue that a level playing field of quality and consistency actually forces guitar players to focus more on their own individuality and playing styles than relying on the guitar to do it for them.
I get it, but you're idealising a world that doesn't exist anymore except for a very very few elite with time and money to burn.
Les Paul's r overrated and the necks r like playing on a baseball bat and not the handle end. Can't go wrong with a PRS but u can with Gibson electrics and that says it all.
I know this vid is older, but goodness, you sound great on these guitars, very inspiring, I can't believer you didn't gravitate toward them at the time
Has Rhett taken enough grief yet for his “PRS guitars lack a vibe” opinions? The funny thing about this video is that I very much agree with his rankings. I have an SE Custom 24 and love it but I will probably upgrade to an S2 Standard for all the reasons he lays out. I’ll have to find a used one to get the dot inlays, which I too prefer over the birds. I get lost with the birds when I’m high on the neck!
Solution, buy two PRS guitars, take one of them and file one of the nut slots down too far, then randomly set the action with the strings off. Restring and enjoy. You'll now appreciate the other one so much more.
I don’t understand what this video says
They are tools and completely up to whatever you like. I think complaining about consistency is odd but that’s why there are many many brands. Find whatever works!
Dont forget tbe tonewood in the amp as well. Everyone including PRS has gone on and on about the wood in the guitars. But the tonewood in the speaker cab is more important!
I wouldn't pick the S2 model on looks alone but basically agree with Rhett otherwise. I have a PRS Santana model, and I like it well enough, really well-made guitar. I find I never pick it up when it's hanging there next to my Les Paul or my Strat. I can't explain why this is.
The problem is that, unlike a strat, Les Paul, telecaster, etc., they don't have a distinct sound. If, for example, I heard a PRS playing on a song, I would not know it was a PRS. And it's not just because our heroes played those guitars. The guitars I mentioned have a very distinct sound–when you hear a strat or telecaster, you know instantly what kind of guitar is playing. The PRS guitars have a generic sound, which does not really leave an impression on people. They have no character. The Les Paul honk and roar, the strat quack and flutiness, the telecaster twang and cluck–they are like old friends saying hello.
Ok older video but this is a great topic…. Anyways , I just got my first PRS (standard 24-08) I’ve changed the pups from the black stock ones (85-15?) idk what they’re called but I put in a set of zebra PRS 85-15s I got off stratosphere. They sound fine , bout the same as the stock ones , which is where I’m so back and forth … for me they are great looking , absolutely wonderfully made, play like a dream and just feel reliable like I’m not home with my Strat but I’m taken care of feeling (y’all know what I mean) so that’s what’s awesome … now tell me if anyone else gets this feeling like everything sounds and feels great at lower volume and gain styles (soft blues / soft pop rock) but as soon as I shift gears I’m just not feeling full when I hit the bridge and an OD or whatever… I’ve heard some people make these guitars sound great but i just can’t seem to dig in with it. No complaints to the guitar tho , some things just don’t jive so I’m with Rhett
Maybe is just a matter of music profiling. I just cant handle the les paul bassy sound and intonation issues. For me PRSs are years ahead.
Great review. I bought my SE Custom 24-08 after 25 years of using a Yamaha super strat. It stood out against the strats and Teles at the price range in the store. I love that this guitar sounds so close to core custom 24. Definitely love the switches for the humbuckers. I love that PRS put so much quality into their SE models. Making great guitars in reach of budget buyers.
So, what guitarists actually want are guitars that cost $4k plus that are inconsistently made from shoddy quality control, will break your back and consistently go out of tune, because that's where the vibe is.
K, got it Rhett.
I see where he is coming from, its like people who enjoy classic car rather than a brand new one, they eant character and the little inperfections where as the PRS is like a solid Japanese car that performs great but doesnt have those little things.
Imagine making guitars so good that they become boring and lack "vibe". What? Dot over bird, imperfections over consistent quality. This was by no means an objective review of the brand and product.
well u actually lied… Where are all the SIG models???
I can't afford one of these, but if I could, I wouldn't want one. I rely a lot on my intuition, and I know what gets me going, and this brand just doesn't. I agree with people who say they are "sterile". I think Paul Smith is a left-brained rationalist, a scientific type, and it's reflected in his guitars. That's going to clash with a lot of artists' sensibilities. I'm one of them, I guess.
Bought a PRS in 1989, never had to adjust it, action never moved still perfect, in 2025 still plays perfectly. Santana summed it up, it’s like playing a Ferrari. Very fast effortless action, still love it. Only adjustment I made was to adjust the tremello bridge to rest on the guitar as a drop down tremello. It gives better sustain and tuning by doing this.
Your explanation for number is weird ????. But let’s say it’s preference and music style
4:07 yep, this is the same guitar cherry color PRS that Brad Delson used most of the time in Linkin Park concerts during Meteora.
I want to own a PRS, and I love the SE McCarty 594 but I hate the thick neck. Im a midget woman with midgets fingers, and the neck is a no-no for me????
Visually, the price brackets don’t work for me, because I find the body carve of the SE much better looking than that of the S2.
“They are too consistent “ is funny. Probably at the same time gets upset that his cappochino triple mocha grande with two double half pumps of soy based ,gluten free mango sauce tastes slightly different than yesterday because of the humidity in the store. Not saying, just saying.
Yes I know cappuccino is spelled wrong.
Uhm… sorry to differ from you. But a guitar that has been built the last 60+ years almost the same way, and with the same basic config, and have "variety" means there is something wrong with the quality. PRS I used to diss, until I got my hands on a SE CE24. And I will get the higher up models, including their take on Strats and Teles. I do like consistency! Love ya man!
It's gotten kinda ridiculous. There are SO many great guitars. I have an S2, but I still like my 'homemade" Warmoths & USA Custom wood + Lawrence pickups. I gotta admit these all sound alike?
You lost me when you said Dots over Birds. ????
Guitars named Paul with dove inlays? Handsome guitars? ????
2025 and the PRS S2 Standard 24 is $1999. Yay inflation!
Fantastic choice of song for the comparison.
I've never played a PRS that had any soul. I think the modern manufacturing is the problem. It's like a skyscraper–a technical masterpiece, but I'd rather visit a medieval cathedral.
Edit: That Hollister burst comment was on the money ????
Rhett: “I don’t like the Customs because they have no vibe, not inspiring”
Also Rhett: “I like red”
Wow what can I say about this guy. All the gear but no idea ????
No soul? My Villa with TV Jones pickups upgraded electronics will rip the pain off the wall…. Nailed the zz top sound and is absolutely killer with a slide….. my core 20th anniversary 22 I’ve replaced the pick ups and the electronics it’s solid mahogany that thing is a surgical instrument… I think the problem is is that people haven’t accepted the PRS as its own thing….. it’s all in the fingers…. dude that’s where the real soul comes from……
mark tremonti approves!
Hate those birds. Also too pointy and asymmetrical, like a character actor that thinks he should be a leading man.
For me, the consistency of PRS from cheap to expensive is very attractive. I don’t have the time or inclination to go around trying to find one that I like. I can simply decide how much I want to spend, what color I like, get a PRS and start playing. I know it’s going to be well-crafted, well designed, and play and sound like I expect it to. If there is charm in a company making a variable product, it’s lost on me.
Mmm… a company that takes a standard and trick customers with aesthetics…
I´ve listened on good Studio Speaker and in my Opinion the Sound is never worth 4 times the Price, Is there a difference? Yes! The CE 24 Sound is a bit more sprinkle and bright, but never ever worth the price difference to an SE.
