Rig Rundown – Big Business

Through the last 15 years and over six LPs (plus 6 EPs), the gruesome twosome of bassist/vocalist Jared Warren and drummer/vocalist Coady Willis have carved out their own surly, pulverizing sound. Sure, they’ve welcomed a guitarist on two occasions—Toshi Kasai and Scott Martin—and beefed up the Melvins for nearly a decade, but as a duo they are their most dynamic, grinding, and careen like the cannonball in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Jared Warren virtually welcomed PG’s Chris Kies into his L.A.-based jam space. In this Rig Rundown, bassist opens up why he chose a J over a P, demystifies his three-amp-four-cab-two-pedalboard setup, and proves that with a few unique octave and synth pedals, he can cover two instruments with four strings.

[Facing a mandatory shelter-in-place ordinance to limit the spread of COVID-19, PG enacted a hybrid approach to filming and producing Rig Rundowns. This is the 31st video in that format.

  • It's the same with refinned mics, as with old amps. People might say they prefer a vintage U47. But in a lot of ways, it's probably degraded a lot compared to how it was originally designed sound. Then people say contradictory things like it sounds just like the old records. But the mic doesn't sound now, like it did then, when it was orginally manufactured. The old record sounds like the the original amps and mics before the gracefully degraded, with age.

  • At the last toronto show before covid, we were thrilled to get to watch you build the loops at the start of the song. It was like being in the studio with you. Loved trying to tell you this after the show to be interrupted by the garbage truck lol.

  • Tight Bros From Way Back When is one of the greatest rock bands that ever existed, Bride Screamed Murder one of the greatest albums ever and Big Business are awesome. This guy has the Midas touch as far as I'm concerned. Loses points for looking too much like Seth Rogan here though.

  • If i would pick a all star band. This guy would be there. But not on base. On vocals

  • His “fuck Trump” sticker is so edgy. Totally punk to hate the guy who all the corporations told you to hate.

  • I remember his od pedal taking a shit at the blood brothers show in vegas years ago, proceeded to smash it with his bass , threw it in the crowd, and played the rest of the show clean. Awesome. Awesome show.

  • I love Big Biz, and this may be the best rig run down just because of how un-tech (I mean that in the best way possible) Jared's set up and talking about it is. Thank you so much for this!

  • Love hearing him talk about Unwound kind of starry eyed and then seeing him play bass for Unwound live last week! Proud of this dude, he fucking killed it

  • Big Business with a prominent mention of Unwound (Melvins too)…best rundown since Deerhoof. Excellent bands for bassists looking for a worthy high gain bass tone. The pedal demos online trying to showcase dirt on a bass rig invariably sound gutless & fizzy, and it's obvious they're completely out of their element. They need to listen to bands like Big Business & Unwound (among others like Johnboy, Unsane, Lightning Bolt, et al) to understand what compelling bass dirt should sound like.

  • A jazz with some quarter pounders is all you need. Especially if you wanna stack piles of effects and signal split. They just seem to love it.

  • I got inspired (thnks Jared and PG) , experiment ing with guitar multi fx, blended with clean bass tone (low passed with eq pedal ) and octaver. Sounds amazing and really fun…

  • So possibly the most important gear of all that no one seems to have mentioned, the rainbow guitar strap, a la Joe Preston…

  • Thank you PG! I've been waiting so long for this video. This band got me into music and have been my favorite band since I saw them open for the melvins in tacoma when I was a kid. I was a shy kid and didnt have the guts to talk to bands I liked but I messaged Jared about guitar pedals and he got back to me and he was really nice. His sound is so unique and rad, its really cool that these guys aren't keeping their sound a secret like some and instead excited to be sharing the joy of music. If you are a music fan and ever get the chance to see them live, do it! I cant wait to hear the new songs. These guys are the real deal.

  • Never listened to Karp much but have had Here Come the Waterworks in rotation for the past 10 year years or so. Really cool to see how humble this guy is. Nice interview

  • Big Business is so so good and the Big Business/Melvins combo is something truly special. One of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. They are telepathic evil jazz musicians.

  • Amazing band. Love them. "Lonely Lyle" is my favourite metal song. Ever. The Lyrics really hit home.

  • Chris does such a good job with these interviews! You really have your information/research all worked out and you can tell that you've done your homework. But you also let the people do the talking and get them to share great stories too. Awesome episode, really enjoyed it!

  • The concept behind paying for a premium YouTube is not having to watch ads. You build them into your videos, I'm just not going to watch them anymore.
