This is my Ibanez Prestige RG1570 review and update — 15+ years later.
I first made a video on this guitar back in 2020, but a lot has happened since then. I’ve recorded albums, played live shows, swapped pickups (only to end up back with the stock Ibanez V7, S1, V8 set)…and recently ran into a weird issue with this guitar that I’ll share at the end of the video.
Here’s what we’ll cover:
Quick history of this 2003 Ibanez Prestige RG1570 (made in Japan at FujiGen)
Specs: Wizard Prestige neck, rosewood fingerboard, Edge Pro tremolo
The stock Ibanez pickups (V7, S1, V8) and why I kept them
Why this has been my main metal guitar for over 15 years
The challenge I’ve run into lately…have you ever experienced this?
⏱ Chapters

Even after all this time, this guitar still delivers killer tone and playability for metal riffs and solos — and it’s a reminder that sometimes the guitar you bond with is the one that sticks.

I used to own an RG1570 as well. I sold it because I thought the super thin neck was harming my hand. Every time I’d play it, I ended up with really bad wrist pain. Turns out it wasn’t a single guitar causing my problem, but that’s another story that lead to a massive sell off of my guitar gear and effectively quitting for several years. But I’m back to playing now, and nowadays I favor thicker necks that aren’t so flat. I did try another RG-like guitar (see profile picture) and I can play it just fine. It’s got a slightly different profile than the Wizard though. Oh and I too hated those pickups through digital gear. They lost all definition and were blah sounding. I didn’t have tubes at the time, and my Headrush Prime wasn’t a thing at that time. If I’d kept that RG I was planning to do the exact same swap you did. Love the Tone Zone and Air Norton.
These are great, congrats..
Nice Axe! I just recently got myself a 90's Jackson Performer that has a similar neck to the Ibanez Wizard neck. Every rock and metal guitarist should have a super strat!
Very cool video Jason. Well ''Super Wizard HP'' which is for Prestige necks, I noticed it also make it easier to play, but at the same time, it's not the most comfortable neck on the market for doing everything, but not too bad as well… Well I am sure you'd like Fender Strat C neck as well. Are you sure that you made up your mind on getting a new guitar certainly, or it's still in doubt whether to get a Jackson or ESP, some time.
If yes, what Jackson looked nice to you? I had tried Virtuoso in the store, it was nice. Also keep attention to the weight as well, normally a guitar over 3.7 KG(8 pounds 5 oz) in my opinion are becoming heavy. It's kind of the sweet spot for me a Superstrat not weighing more than 3.7 KG. It can be personal thing, but your Prestige has a basswood body, unlike new Prestige's with Mahogany, but there are sometimes lighter RG's, it's best if you also consider weight on superstrats. My M-1000 weighs 4.0KG(8 pounds 15 oz). It's kinda significant difference between Prestige which is 3.6 KG's(I had to weigh all guitars in store, weigh was important for my health). picked up the lightest RG. Cheers!
Yes! I love Ibanez guitars, particularly 550's. After a while the neck profile definitely starts to feel uncomfortable, but it doesn't stop me from buying them. This also goes for the v8/s1/v7 pickups.
Still have mine in cosmo Blue. I got it new in 2004 at $ 899.00 it's one of my work horse guitars, I'll never let it go. Plays as good as my jems, I love the neck. Never had any problems with it at all. Great video.
Awesome review Jason on that Ibanez Guitar I have 2 of them
Yup same issue. Except I’m in my 40s ????. I am an RG prestige and strat guy. The Strat neck just feels comfortable to me now. I still love the super wizard neck but I just find the Strat neck more comfy for me. And I grew up on an RG played it for 28 years of my life.
dammit man i've been playing for 35 years still cant get that dam sweep picking down everything else i'm golden. I love the guitar reminds me of my old purple ibanez I had in the 90s. Some great riffs in there brother love the videos.
Man I totally get your problem. I have an RG550 with the Ultra Wizard neck. When I first got I LOVED it. I still really like it, but I keep getting bouts where it just doesn't feel right. I have large hands like yourself so I'm not sure what factor that plays. I'll find myself picking up my Les Paul just for a change. That usually makes me fall in love with the Ibanez neck again hahahaha.
Hi Jason, do you find that the flatter fretboard radius allows you to play faster? I guess your Ibanez is around a 17” radius and you tele probably 9.5”. Big difference.
I’ve noticed that a wider neck is harder for me to play the lower 2 strings because of the stretch involved which has changed as I got older. I am in my 60’s. I’ve started doing hand stretch exercises which helps a lot.
Thank you
Gary
I was just listening to Overcometh again this morning, really enjoy it ????????????????
I have ibanez rg 550
Nice guitar ????, awesome playing, great video!
Jason I don't think you never really gave the Dimarzio humbuckers a chance, Ibanez RG and Dimarzio is a perfect match!!!!
I bought a couple 570s back in 91 when they weren't super expensive. Kirk Hammet and CC DeVille were playing them so I gave it a try and loved them. I wish I still had them. I was in love with my USA BC Rich Gunslinger and Warlocks at the time. The Edge trems are awesome bridges. I've had more issues with Floyd's and Kahlers than I ever did from an Edge Pro. The pickups weren't bad. The V7 V8s sounded great to me. I left them in after I wrestled with wanting to put Seymour Duncan TB 6s in them. Great guitars. I'm 55 as of this year and over time I have gravitated to my C shape Strat necks and even my 50s Les Paul necks. I used to swear by my thin necks.
I get what you mean wrt the Air Norton and Tone Zone. Not for me either. ????????
Hey bro, great video, and I have the same guitar, and I love it. That neck is the best. Check out my channel, you can see some of my other guitars too, but the Ibanez is always my go-to. And I feel you on the pickups, they sound awesome. Well, have a blessed weekend and keep on rocking !! https://youtu.be/jbxDXPaAmcI?feature=shared
I’m a guy who likes metal and hard rock, and I’ve never been a fan of those super slim (wizard) necks. Besides being uncomfortable, I think most people overlook how much the guitar neck wood adds to the instrument’s tone. Don’t worry, you’re not the only one… Not to mention, we’re not shredders ONLY, we want the core riff sound to have the same level of tonal quality. I feel like these guitars were designed mainly for someone who plays something very specific, even though they are versatile.
????Have you made any videos on
1) Tone creation?
2) settings for YouTube video recording?
Do you still have that German guitar?
Had one of these in Cosmo Blue (I believe that's the name? really dark blue with sparkle on it, making it look like a starry night). Absolutely the best instrument I have ever played. I cried when I had to sell it a few months after buying it.
Jason, 15 years and I bet you got it just now broken in. Really nice Ibanez guitar. I do love my Ibanez guitars especially the necks. Never a problem with any of them. I don't have any with tremolo systems though just due to string changes and the fact I do good to change on the hardtails. Great video!!!
I totally get the neck thing. I couldn’t even stand to touch a guitar Until I bought a Jackson dinky. I have to have that thinner neck profile to enjoy playing
naw, don't be shy, the Ibanez Edge trems are superior to FR. You can even get them that won't go out of tune if a string breaks. I think other brands would use them if they could XD
I think people need to stop saying "pickups don't matter" and instead say "pickups are 5% of the sound" or whatever. I think when it comes to "bang for the buck" tone changes, pickups are the least efficient thing to spend money on, but that's still different from "don't matter." (and even Glenn Fricker will say this, and we know his view on spending money on pickups lol) Some pickups are more articulate than others, and that's a big deal for me. Inverted power chords sound terrible with a pickup that is not articulate. I don't know the why behind this buy maybe it's the magnet. Pickups are not complicated lol. That said there's a guy that compares DiMarzio pickups in the same guitar and you can readily tell between a Titan and a D-Activator, for example.
Speaking of old friends, I've recently fallen back in love with my old Carvin DC125C. It's just a killer metal guitar even if it looks a little dated >_> I do wish I'd gone with a DC127 (the 25 lacks a neck pickup) for versatility, but like Wolverine, it's the best at what it does, but what it does ain't very nice m/(>.<)m/
Great color on it and monster sound ????
????????????KILLA ????????
